ah, but if you are like me, who has been holding off FOREVER on buying a new mac or laptop, this is now the obvious "sign from heaven."

Then...I salute your patience And I will envy you just a little.
they will break off the drawing/painting, word processing, and database apps for $99 a piece and go after office one brick at a time.

Which would be a clever thing to do, since I know a lot of people really use only word processing most of the time and they are more likely to pay 99$ for iWrite than to buy Office.
Steve said, the 17" pBook is to replace desktops. So, is a 17" monitor too big for you? It's isn't when compared to my cineam display. This is meant more for desktops then portability.

Yeah but it's still a portable so it might be a little big to carry around.
When people sling together knee-jerk threads up saying, 'Steve: Yes, No.', they ought to look at that guy up there leading the Apple charge.
I don't think anybody from IBM, M$, Dell or from a Coca Cola company can lead the Apple we know and love. For better or worse it's Steve's Apple and I think if he weren't here tomorrow, we'd soon miss 'his' Apple.
That was one hell of a keynote.
And a significant one...clearly outlining Apple's strategy short, medium and long-term.
And, if any doubt remained as to Apple software being bang on track, this keynote erradicated and key a clear message as to WHERE Apple is heading.
Powerpoint- BLOWN OUT OF THE WATER!
*'Keynote', superb. I've been waiting for Apple to do 'Powerpoint' right born of it's limitations.
Internet Explorer- APPLE TONKS REDMOND'S BROWSER!
*'Safari' looks great. Fuh-***fast! *(I don't think my Athlon renders pages that fast!) Folks, here's how to do a proper browser. Boy, no longer always first, but when they come to the party...
Apple are taking the Redmond guys out on software, piece by piece. As the blows reign in..., "This isn't a mud hole, it's an operating table...and I'm the surgeon!' (Steve on the Bill. Who's yer daddy?)
iOFFICE? Pending with Nuke Crosshair firmly targeted on Redmond? Steve's finger on the red button?
And add up those stats from retail stores to x86 visitors to the switch site at Apple.
With this keynote, it was as if for the first time I saw the edges of cosmic pieces moving into allignment...and they're moving on down for a rumble.
iLife- the updates and integration between the updated iapps is nothing short of AMAZING! For what? £40? Say, again!? iTunes right into iMovie 3? Still photos in iMovie from iPhoto? Am I dreaming? Yes folks, Lemon Bon Bon is raving!!!
AND, guys, I'm not, repeat NOT a laptop kind of guy (trust me...I like my POWERMACS with 970 powered to go...) BUT that 17 inch 'desktop replacement' is nothing short of stuperfying. I first thought, 'laptops'? 17 inch. I don't get it...everyone was saying something else. That's...er...huge for a laptop...12 inches? Filling Matsu's 'price gap' in the Powerbook range. (Where's the vPod, said i?) Then, the more I thought about it...it...MADE SENSE! It's an area where Apple are giving the x86 crowd a real fist. AND they're adding range to that 'rigid' grid. Okay. I NOW eat crow pie on my 'rigid grid' statement. At least where lap tops are concerned. They have single handedly blown the x86 camp away.
I...I think I...WANT ONE OF THOSE 17 inch POWERBOOKS! WITH FIREWIRE2!!!!!!!! Geforce 4 to go?
We've had QuartzExtreme...here comes Airport Extreme...wireless fast lane...BAY-BEEE!
Final Cut Express? Most of the key functionality for £200? That is fantastic. Bye-bye Premiere!!!
Apple are a software company. They just happen to be brilliant at making laptops and iMacs and Cubes.
I can't wait for the 970s to arrive. I don't think I'll be able to cope.
Summing up:
In Norwegian accent:
"Bill Gates, Michael Dell, HP, Tablet PCs, Beige x86s...Toshiba...are you watching, are you listening? STEVE GAVE YOUR BOYS ONE HELLUVA BEATING!!!"
I'm so tempted to sell my pBook/1 gig on ebay and get the new 17" aluninum one.

Somehow I knew you were going to say that. Maybe I spend too much time perusing the boards...but the minute Stevie announced a 17" PB the first person that I thought of was KidRed. Is that crazy? Me thinks not.
The big reason the new towers and iMacs couldn't be announced: their wasn't enough time!
The 12" Powerbook is probably the best deal on an Apple computer ever. DDR RAM, bluetooth, G4, superdrive all in the smallest full featured labtop ever.
The PowerBooks didn't surprise me one bit. I knew they were coming. Apple has had a cycle of revamps every two years on these things, and complete redos every 3-4.
Great show, though, great show. With MacWorld Tokyo cancelled, MacWorld Boston being a point of contention as well, and Apple's huge amount of upcoming updates (AirPort Extreme, Bluetooth, FW2, 970s, SuperDrives (iLife including iDVD is being bundled with every Mac, after all)), as well as the rumored digital lifestyle device(s) highly rumored, I think we'll be seeing some densely packed "special events" in the next year announcing all of these goodies and throwing people off of the MacWorld-twice-a-year-track. I can't wait to see what is coming.. it's going to be a lot of surprises from here on out.
"As I've said before, it ain't the MW's, it's the update pace that counts. Laptops seem to have finally gotten into a decent groove update-wise. Desktops still suck, but I'm not in the market for a desktop, and won't be for a while."
Patience. I feel a disturbance in the force...

I'm definitely on board with Mr. Bon Bon on this one.
What hardware did we *expect*?:
1) ViPod (mpeg-4/color screen/etc)
2) Updated PowerTowers (not a huge update, but a little sumthin sumthin)
3) Apple PVR (well, not expected, but wished for...)
4) Tapplet (personally, my biggest letdown from MWSF)
What did we get from above? Squat. But what we did get were things we didn't expect and maybe didn't even want (until now). What does that mean? Good things to come people, good things to come.
I'm surprised at how good this keynote was. There was nothing either unsustainably amazing or bad, just solid-looking products. Microsoft is probably going to try to screw Apple over Safari and Keynote, so I hope they're ready for that.
Apple needs to address their consumer desktop line; I believe the iMac and eMac are still priced out of reach for what they deliver. Apple's shown that they can use what they've got with the PowerBooks. There has to be something remarkable and cheap that they could excel with.
"I'm surprised at how good this keynote was. There was nothing either unsustainably amazing or bad, just solid-looking products. Microsoft is probably going to try to screw Apple over Safari and Keynote, so I hope they're ready for that."
I think Safari, Keynote and THOSE laptops are sending out an unambiguous message! I think the gloves are off.
I'm dying for the Office app' next!!!
"Apple needs to address their consumer desktop line; I believe the iMac and eMac are still priced out of reach for what they deliver."
Correct.
"Apple's shown that they can use what they've got with the PowerBooks. There has to be something remarkable and cheap that they could excel with."
Exactly. However, I think THOSE laptops give an enticing hint about the desktops to come.
Irony.
In a month or so's time. Surely Apple won't have desktops that are comparitavely poorer than their laptops? If it doesn't augur well for the desktops in 2 months time...I think it WILL in 6 months time...
I'm still on with my iCube theory. They COULD release a killer sub £500 headless enamel white beast.
I'd buy in a heart beat.
Lemon Bon Bon
"it's really strange,
today has given us some hope!
am i right?
i'm really looking forward to see what else apple has in store for 2003!"
Me too. For the first time, I get the real feeling that Apple is truly on to something. The pieces are beginning to come together.
"i had a feeling that there wouldn't be a repeat performance of last year's macworld!"
I agree that Apple has gone far and above people's expectations of portables now. I think this is good of course and can only lead to better things on the PowerMac end of things. I do think that the eMac and iMac pricing is still too high as well.
Apple needs to make ONE model of the eMac at $899. They need to have just 3 different iMacs going from $999, $1399, and $1699.
PowerBooks need to be in 3-4 configs. 12 inch at 1799, 15 at 2599 and 17 at 3299.
I have to chime in with my 2 cents: I was totally inspired and happy with all that went on today.
Not being hung up on specs, numbers and buzzwords, I'm more into the overall "big picture" take on things and today's keynote just kinda hit my spot, so to speak.
Nobody is doing what Apple is. And if they're attempting it, it's simply nowhere near as elegant, integrated, thought-out and, well, slick!
Great updates to apps I really enjoy and if I ever get into a position where I have to give presentations, you can bet your butt I'll gladly be laying down $99 for Keynote! Holy cow...now THAT was cool.
And I'm using Safari right now (after bringing over all my Explorer bookmarks) and I've not had a single problem. And it does indeed seem to be quite snappy. And it's a beta! It's only going to get better, folks.
And what can I say about the new PowerBooks?
Talk about covering both ends of the spectrum!
All the things people have griped and complained about have been tackled head on and resolved (AirPort reception, easily-scratched case, ports placed inconveniently in the back, etc.).
With the new 12" and 17" PowerBook, Apple took all the best things about the iBook line (which, face it...is just a much cooler laptop) and applied them to the PowerBooks, making the PowerBooks pretty much as cool as the iBooks!
A first!
I said, on more than one occasion here, that I'd love to see a "G4-based 12" iBook".
Screw it...close enough! I can learn to live without the white glossy plastic!
I just need to correct a mistake in my post (and post with Safari, which, by the way, rocks on toast).
The Office promo doesn't run out on Jan 17. You have another 90 days to get Office for $199 (which is what it should retail for, but that's beside the point).
I wonder what happens in 90 days that would make MS want to grow their OS X marketshare that much. Remember, Steve promised a surprise every 90 days, so we'll be due for one.
I'm betting that we're starting to see AppleWorks Pro after a fashion, and it'll shape up to be something like iLife: Several distinct applications (starting with Keynote) that stand alone, but work closely together.
Maybe AppleWorks will come out the same way? Cocoa makes that kind of thing very easy...
(Aside: Is anyone else really, really thankful that they didn't have to have Steve Jobs as their "one low paid beta tester?" That poor dev team... )

I really don't think they can, at least not over Safari. It uses open source standards, and looks and behaves entirely different than IE. Keynote, however, well, we'll just see.

I will wallow in my self pity for not being able to buy a reasonably priced tower made by Apple-again. and again, and again........................
