Iris Printers

Anyone here terribly familiar with Iris printers... say the Iris Realist 5030?

Just curious about them, how they compare to other solutions. I'm looking at using one for printing my own photographs and artwork instead of having to send my files out all the time. How much would one expect to pay for such a printer? What are the main differences between it and the IrisPRINT 4?

considering the price and space (they are large) I don't think you will find too many users or abusers of those systems here.

If you need answers or want to look at reviews, look for a magazine called Design Graphics. They used to have reviews of several printing methods and reviews of bigger printers. I don't know their URL, sorry...

And then there are the ubiquitous searches using Google. And, of course (since this is a somewhat large expenditure of money) you may want to go and talk to some of the different vendors in your area who use iris printers. You may be surprised at the cost of materials and supplies and come to realize that the current method of doing it is more ecnonomical.

Oh yeah, and check any local art schools or colleges, not to mention contacting the people who sold those places the printers in the first place...

For now, though, you might want to check the Printers forum at DPReview.com:

    Hope that helps...

Well, I was hoping perhaps people here used them at their job. I've spoken with people at the SMFA about the 3047 there.

Truth be told, I just paid $500 for an Iris Realist 5030 that appears to be in pristine condition. I was hoping to get some feedback on whether or not this was a bright idea before actually admitting I did it.

I guess it wasn't a bad price. Found Iris ink refills for $50/set too....

Keep it clean and don't let any cats near it and it should last a long time.

And hold testing for 'special colors' (ie: pink) like the color copier techs I knoew used to... There's only so much porn a person can hang on their walls before people look at your strangely...

Damn, you knew exactly what I'd be doing with that 22x30 paper size

seriously though, please tell me $500 is a decent price. Iris tells me it can be upgraded to the current IrisPRINT model too
