Stupid wintel people!

Hey guys!

I have this friend of mine who I've almost switched 2 times now, and he is now buying a new DELL to my dislike! Anyways, everytime he gets all excited about his DELL, he gets angry at me, says my computers suck, says I suck, and just beats down on me in general! Anyways, he was going to switch, but his dad's work friend, named Jack, keeps insisting Macs are for people who don't know how to use computers - he said he'd like to take me out to lunch to have a "long talk" with me about computers - dork! Anyways, because of this, his dad said that he would buy him a fully loaded DELL for free, or a nice PowerBook that he'd have to work for. ABSOLUTE SHIT! Then he goes off on a tangent about, "My Inspiron is faster than your PowerBook; the Inspiron sells more than the PowerBook (ya, stupid Windows 95% market share); PowerBooks are for fags; sorry I cant be as rich as you (ya right, buy a 2800 dollar DELL shitbook and not buy a 1999 minibook! and he belongs to a country club!); I'm never going to bring up computers with you again (thank God); whats wrong with windows XP (and I talked about UNIX, aqua, cocoa, etc...); Mac OS X is so much harder to use (uh huh...); and the list goes on!

Just to show what a good friend I am, however, I even said "Cool, that's cool Michael," to him to maybe ease him over. Guys, I'm a nice person, but this kinda weird crap where he beats up on me for such a stupid reason bothers me - I think he may have some deeper emotional problems because he always seems depressed and stuff like that - which I don't blame him for, really.

Don't judge people by the color of their OS, but by the content of their character!

Sorry for giving the rant. What do you think?

Whatever. Doesn't sound like a terribly cool friend anyhow.

I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Whatever computer they want to use is fine with me. Call me an art fag or a computer moron because I use a mac. Fine. I bill enough money off of work I do on my Mac to make most people get a hard on.

My brother bought a Dell and got so excited when he finally hooked it up to a TV. He was bragging about his computer for the longest time when I unplugged the S-Video cable from his computer, plugged it into mine and opened the lid. No configuration, no button pushing, it just worked. He still has to configure second monitors and TV's each time he uses them. His new Dell can't do anything (except PC games) that my 3-year old Mac can't. He doesn't brag anymore.

The only thing I actually like about the Dell Inspiron is the screen resolution. 1600x1200 <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Um-K, free Dell versus 2000+ Mac. No brainer, even mac laptops aren't that good! And desktops? Fuggedaboudit. It's like passing up a free Chevy because you just have to have a Toyota, your friend made the right choice.

Well, I don't mind if he takes the computer, but he's acting like an asshole along the way - not always concerning computers...

It's your friend who's stupid. No need to blame a chip + software maker.

You're friend's an asshole because Dells suck, right?

I'd much rather have a free Dell over a Mac I'd have to work for.

Ya, exactly, I'm not blaming him just because of his Dell.

No, he's an asshole becuase of the way he treats me over such a small thing! It's not only this kinda stuff, he tries to turn my friends on me too - because of a computer. I wish it were that simple...

mail his stupid ass a few viruses.

tell him he can return the favor any time, if he can find one.

sorry, but i don't feel the need to justify my computer uses to anyone for anything. if someone wants to talk about it fine, but there's no point hitting them over the head with it. my laptop works, it gets the job done, and i love it.

my PC now sits in a corner gathering dust. that's not by accident.

i wouldn't worry about it, just try not to gloat too much when his laptop ****s up.

If you can't be an a-hole to your friends? Just break his nads if/when things go wrong with the machine. Some relationships turn out that way: you become friendly nemeses. It can be fun.

I agree also. It's so trivial. PCs really are good for basically the same things Macs are, and they are also good gaming machines unlike Macs. I know a lot of people here don't play games, but I bet it's half because they don't have PCs.

Anyway, a friend of mine flip flops a lot. He enjoys and respects Macs but he sees that Apple has had better years and right now the price/performace just isn't there. He built an Athlon 2200+ box with a Radeon 9100 for about $500, not including monitor. It tears through SETI work units in three hours, vs. his dual 867 which he sold that took four times as long. Basically he's decided that he'll keep his homebuilt desktop, and he'll also get an older Mac laptop (perhaps an old iBook or a used PowerBook G3, or possibly even a 3400). He tells me about XP... he used to hate Windows machines for a while but now he's learned more about XP and he tells me it's pretty good, not as good as OS X but still easy to use and Mac-like. Any drivers you need are installed so there are none of the previous problems like a sound card or video card not working. WMP 9 is apparently about as good as iTunes, as it has automatic playlist and library management unlike most Windows MP3 applications. Unfortunately it's still retarded with regard to MP3 encoding, but he just uses MusicMatch for that.

Anyway, he basically tells me that it's not quite as easy as a Mac but there are plenty of features (and, of course, the nearly endless hardware customization options) that make up for it. I'd get a Windows desktop PC as well but my iBook basically eliminates any need for one. And in the future, I'm afraid that Palladium or whatever it is would interfere too much into using my computer for what I want to, so maybe I never will get a PC. I dunno, I'll just see what happens.

    yummy.

Well, Mac OS X is getting better on the gaming platform... but, I agree, it doesn't have as much of a selection as Windoze. Perhaps someday I'll have to get a PEE CEE, but, for now, any game I could possibly want is on Mac OS X.

    I wouldn't.

However, I would turn around and sell the dell as quickly as possible and put it toward a reasonable Mac.

Games are for consoles and vice versa.

Ignore your friend Bio - he has no taste. You cannot help him.

The main reason I say Macs are bad for games isn't because of the selection... true, it's not even close to the selection for Windows but it's not too shabby. I mean, we have Max Payne, Jedi Knight II, Warcraft III, Ghost Recon, Medal of Honor Allied Assault, etc etc etc. There are a few notable exceptions like Halo (which I am ADDICTED to on the XBox!), Counterstrike, and GTA, but whatever.

The main reason gaming sucks on the Mac is because games aren't optimized for G3/G4 processors and OS X. So I end up having to run Jedi Knight II (just the demo) at minimum settings on my iBook just to make it playable. Warcraft 3 is barely playable at minimum settings, if that. And this is with a Radeon 7500. If I was on a PC laptop with similar stats (say, a 1.2 GHz P3m and the same graphics card), I bet they'd be much smoother and faster juts because games are optimized to run with Windows and AMD and Intel processors. That's the main problem, and that's why I'm not buying games for my Mac anymore. If I want games, I'll get an XBox or a gaming PC. But neither is really worth it. I don't own a TV and I don't really want to have the trouble of owning one. Same goes for a gaming PC.

Nothing to do with market share then.

Actually it has everything to do with market share. If Macs were very common, say, 15% of the market, then more games would come out for the Mac, but more importantly, they would mostly be optimized to run well on most Mac systems with decent graphics cards. I'm not saying that MoH:AA should run silky-smooth on a CRT iMac, but my iBook certainly shouldn't choke on WC3 or JK2 at minimum settings. If the game was optimized to run on a G3 really well in OS X, then I bet it would be plenty smooth. I think the CPU has as much to do with game performance as the GPU, and Macs are so far behind in the CPU race it's not even funny. Macs have the same graphics cards available (for way more money of course) but even with very efficient dual RISC processors, games aren't going to run well because they're designed with the P4 in mind.

EDIT: I didn't want anyone to take this the wrong way. Macs are fine machines, very well designed and everything... but I don't think I'll ever get a Mac desktop again. Just laptops. I'm not exactly ripping on Macs because of course consoles are the best for games, not computers.

Still... being able to play GTA at 1280x1024 with antialiasing and having it be silky smooth... I don't think any Mac can actually do that, not even a dual 1.42 w/ Radeon 9700. Well, of course, GTA isn't even available for the Mac. But you get the point. That's the one advantage computers have over consoles - high resolution.
