They should have at least made it blue and it would echo Cartier.
Or orange to invoke Hermes with whom they already partner.
blue would be preferable for me. I'm thinking of getting the cellular model for my mom for emergencies, but it's going to require an upgrade across the board unfortunately, since her 5c won't support it. But she's not gonna like the red dot with her blue band, and that was one of the ways we were hoping to encourage her to wear it. If we end up going this route I'll definitely consider the dot covers.
Never thought I'd see the day Apple's new-found fashion bent went so wonky that people are looking to put stickers on their several-hundred-dollar-devices.

You'll be OK. We're preventing the next ice-age, which is overdue.
While I don’t necessarily think the red dot is “hideous”, I also don’t understand the logic behind it. ... I just don’t understand this particular decision. Seems so arbitrary. I’d love a REAL explanation from Apple as to why they chose to do this, just for my own curiosity.
Back in March 2015 Tim Cook visited the Palo Alto Apple Store and was wearing an Apple Watch with the red dot. There was a very positive reaction to this unique look. Lots of people wanted the red dot. So much so that a company even started selling stickers to customize the look of the Watch and enable this look.
Now two and a half years later Apple do the red dot and there is a mostly negative reaction! Ironically, the company that started because people wanted a red dot is now the one people are turning to to hide it.
It's interesting how people desire something they see that's unique, that they can't easily get, but when that very same thing is the standard product they think it's horrible.

To me this is the more interesting story.
To me the more interesting story is the fact that they're apparently field testing their products two years ahead of release now. Makes you wonder if the LTE Apple Watch was supposed to be the first model, but they just couldn't do the tech yet.

I don't recall this... so I'm not sure how many 'lots of people' is. But, I think you've hit on the distinction between fashion and style/design. Style/design are more timeless and are arguably, either good or bad. Fashion is fleeting and about popularity and status, and often has little to do with good design.

The stainless used to (?) have a black crown, which is far more neutral than the red. I for one am not *complaining* about the red, I just think it's a very odd choice as it looks terribly out of place to me and doesn't seem to serve any actual purpose. Why not a neutral color that coordinated with the case finish? ¯\(°_o)/¯

Yes, on that one model, it's not extremely hideous... just fairly over the top.
Have you ever seen a fashion show?

Tim's wearing an aftermarket combo in this photo.
