At least 1/3 of the threads were locked in FH the last few days. Looking into these, the reasons given were stated as "already in another thread" (without giving a link to the other thread), "not funny", "has moved into a thread about whether Steve likes to open stores in Paris" (how about a little post to get the original topic going again - that's what MODERATION means), "Good thread covering many different things, current and future..software and hardware", then leave it alone dammitt. Also: "These sorts of predictions could have gone into any number of other threads about new PowerMacs. This stuff is just wild, opinionated speculation." Sure, it could have, but it is specifically titled "Expectations for the new G4". What the hell do you think so many people come here for? This place is BETTER than ANY other Mac forum for this type of discussion. Don't kill it! Do any of these new people have any <i>experience</i> in this? The behavior would indicate otherwise.

Oh please. Stop cutting off an active discussion for silly reasons like this. What's redundant? the fact that Apple is announcing new Powermacs? Only one comment allowed on that subject?
Look, what readers are saying is that this place used to be a very very good read. Period. Several times a day. And lots of enthusiastic new posts. If a thread wiggles a little off track, sometimes that just brings in more new opinions and ideas and references. As others have said, if it starts to get boring, it will fall off the radar. But by splitting hairs and locking one thread after another for the bullshit reasons listed above, people will think twice before composing a well-written and researched post - by the time you go to post it, the thread is already locked. Or someone cracks a joke to part of your comments and your post goes to neverland because of them.
This happens very often when new mods are armed with a lock button. Those that don't get tired of their new toy in a week or so need to let somebody with a little less gleefulness take over.
EDIT: Now that I've gone through these threads, it appears to be 100% locked without reason.
When I used to moderate at MacNN I liked to "keep it all in one thread". Some times a thread would get started and a good discussion going .. but redundant. Rather than kill a topic with a living discussion in it I would just leave it. When in doubt leave it open.
i think i should be made a moderator so i can have an even playing field against this powertrip you seem to be having of late. better watch yerself grover. just like i watch my back, in case you intend to have yer way with me while im not paying attention...
OK, admittedly, I'm new (posting) here. But I just visited the FH threads and...Holy F**cking Sh*tskeez! 24 out of 40 threads locked or moved??? Wow! Come on! A little of that is to be expected on an announcement day, but...wow.
I was really enjoying the 'New PowerMac Specs' thread. And then what? It gets moved because of this?
I might point out, of course, that The Mod is in direct violation of the new Posting Guidelines (see my reply in Suggestions).

"This area should be used to discuss...hardware that is CURRENTLY shipping" (caps mine).
These machines are NOT shipping. The 1.2GhzDP will not ship until September. The thread in question actually discussed the relevance of a 1 vs. 2 L3 cache (amongst everything else) which will not be resolved until September. Is this not STILL Future Hardware?

yeah, moving threads can be a pain. one thing to keep in mind though is that the thread was talking about all of the models. some are shipping (1-3 days) some aren't. (6-8 weeks.)
for the most part the moves were just to keep from having duplicate threads in both future hardware and current hardware discussing the exact same things. it can be tough keeping track of which are covering what. (at least that would be why i would move them)
you can still follow them in current hardware. it's not as lively as future hardware, but i promise there can been some good discussions there as well.
(and if you look on the CH front page, only 2 locked threads, and both were plain old moved threads.) good god, one was even moved to future hardware. :eek: go figure.
seriously, for the most part, if you don't want to see locked threads (i think most are for moves) then post them in the right place.
after a new product release there's bound to be a massive move of threads as what was once future hardware becomes current hardware. *shrug*
