I have two high end Canon printers, both MG8220. With the advent of Mojave, the scan to computer app from Canon no longer works. I could buy Vuescan, which is up to date for $100, or use Image Capture free from Apple, but reduced functionality. Too much of a pain in the ass. Don't buy Canon, ever.

The fun thing that's developing in this thread is the same thing that develops in a hard drive thread.

    1: "X burned me, so I'll never get X again. I like Y."

    2: "What? I like X. Y is awful."
    Hahaha Yup!

Now I don't print a ton, but I have an HP LaserJet P1006 and its still on the original toner cartridge after about 3yrs. Awesome little laser printer and its not very big either. Easily fits on my desk. It's not for mass printing, but for the occasional print, it works very well.

I don't see any need for a scanner these days as there are apps for your phone that will do the same thing. I use Scanner Pro whenever I need to scan something.

I spent a little more and bought a wifi multifunction color laser printer about 5 years ago. Aside from the 1/2 empty toner cartridges that you get with the printer (this is common), it has been no problem. Having a scanner/copier has been really useful, so I'm not sure what the disdain for multifunction printers is about, or why we're even talking about unreliable inkjets anymore.

[...] Whether you choose color or B&W, get a LASER printer!
The problem is that colour laser printers do a lousy job printing photos. They're good for coloured text and graphs, but photos are dull and blurry with visible banding.

We used to have both colour laser for everything except photos and a decent inkjet just for photos, but we've retired the inkjet. For the rare occasions we need a photo printed, we just send it out to a nearby printing service.

For small photos I want right away, I use a Canon Selphy dye sublimation printer. Like laser, never dries or clogs and always looks terrific. The only downside is the affordable consumer dye sub printers max out at 4x6. For anything else, send it out

I agree that Canon can let their software age out. I use Vuescan because it's better (e.g. includes OCR, lots of control). I have a Canon MF634Cdw color laser now and I think it's amazing; hopefully I get a good 10 years out of it before I run into driver issues.

The problem is that I've seen even worse results in HP's software. I don't have a lot of experience with Brother but their color laser option wasn't as good as Canon's, all things considered.

I would stay away from all inkjet if you don't print often. They dry up and eventually ruin the printer and just a pain in the end.  Get a cheaper brother laser printer.  I wouldn't recommend anything HP either as they can't keep up with driver updates for the Mac.   Brother, Canon, Xerox seem to be ok at keeping drivers up-to-date for the Mac in my experience.
Yeah, 10x this. I switched to a Canon MF634Cdw color laser and getting a perfect page the first time every time is such a contrast to print / swear / clean & waste ink / print / still not happy. On top of that, the duplex scanner is really fast. You can't really do photos, but they looked like crap in the inkjet anyhow due to clogged heads. It's so easy to just order pro prints. For small prints, I got a Selphy dye sublimation printer which is another amazingly better alternative to ink. I just wish I could get a 5x7 or 8x10 sized dye sub printer.
