I hope this is true, I love my iPhone 8, don't need duo cameras, and would enjoy the smaller form factor. I think this will probably happen, but not in the spring, but will be likely be part of the regular (September) 2020 iPhone lineup

That describes the iPhone XR pretty much. AN SE is supposed to satisfy the people that want a small screen and form factor.
C'mon! A slightly bigger phone with square borders, so it won't slide from your hands on day two. Apple generous enough as to reduce expected incomes for broken screens! What else you may ever want? Innovation Only !. I can't figure out if Apple really has a clue of how deep is this "the thrill is gone" feeling.... btw: I just end my >10 yrs commitment with Music and Apple Music services in general, tired of waiting for lossless streaming and a usable service. Moved to Tidal; within hours of using it I was wondering how I was that stubborn not to make this move before, keeping the hope alive, year after year, that Apple would be concerned about providing a quality music service again.

You guys keep saying “But *I* like small phones!” as if that means it’s worth Apple’s trouble compared to selling bigger phones to more people.
I like small phones and I can not lie. Apple generally doesn't make kit people ask for. Apple generally makes kit they believe people should want and would want, if they were smarter. So Apple does the 'thinking' for them.

But when the subject does come up, I make my preferences known, same as like and different minds do as well. Apple doesn't really listen, or at least not always, so I don't expect them ever to do what I want, and frequently end up liking what they do with what they think I should want.

So as the subject has come up again, I'll say want the SE upgraded while keeping the current form factor. Give me a full frontal screen. I think Apple could put a good 4.5/4.6" screen on the current SE. I can live without Face ID and Force/3D Touch (though I do like the idea of 3d Touch). I'll take a notch, no problema, it would be smaller. Earphone jack? I'd prefer to keep it, but if they want to take it, I can live with that too, if need be. Let the big boys have USB-C whenever they get it. I'm happy with the Lightning port.

The customary evolution bumps in processor, graphics, RAM, and storage are good enough for me. They don't have to be top tier.

The cost... I dunno. $550-$750 would be ok, maybe a little more. It's the form factor that I want, far more important to me than the price.
I think you will be getting exactly what you want.
I think you're wrong. I think Apple will make a bigger version of the SE with a bezeled screen, and not a 'full' screen like I want. I mentioned in another post that an SE could fit a larger, bezel-less screen on its current size. I think Apple wants to keep it an entry level phone and keep the price down. They'll also want to differentiate it from their flagship line, and I think the older-style screen is the easiest and most dramatic way to do that. But if you're right I'll be very happy.

That would surprise me - because it seems that full screen with face ID is their path of the future for all phones (even moderately priced ones) and the 7 & 8's are just out-dated, hangers on.   I suspect, if they want to save money to keep the cost down, they'll put in an older processor and lesser camera.   But, we shall see

100% agree with some of the above posters. The iPad mini treatment would be perfect for the SE. Same shape, same solid chassis, with updated internals. Larger screen with less margin optional, but not at the expense of making the whole thing bigger.

I have a feeling they do that is the production line start up costs.  I think it takes a lot of money to get production ramped.  So having all new phones and different tiers would mean every year new production line set up costs.  Selling last year's models for the low end tier prevents that.
I think that was your response... the forum seemed to mess it all up.

Anyway, they seem to have plenty of money to invest in the production line startup costs for all sorts of other models of phones. Did we really need the X, then the XS, the XR, etc. either? They could have saved lots of money and just made one or two models.

That said, I agree that selling old models saves Apple money. But, Apple should (and used to) put a better user experience ahead of that kind of penny-pinching. These are premium products that Apple makes huge margins on, not bargain basement, barely making it situations were maybe that kind of thing is unavoidable.

LOL, people on rumor websites purporting to be experts while claiming Apple doesn’t know what it’s doing or doesn't do its homework. The chuckles are endless.

You guys keep saying “But *I* like small phones!” as if that means it’s worth Apple’s trouble compared to selling bigger phones to more people. This is why Apple got out of making printers, scanners, routers, etc.
They wouldn't know because they never sold a smaller, full-featured phone (once they went bigger). Do they have some special magic 8 ball I don't know about?
Maybe a full-featured SE would sell as good or better than the bigger models. It would certainly sell enough, though.
