I thought about Airport on the lwoend but then I realized that Apple wants to keep the lowend cheap as possible and also offer more incentives to the high end to get people to pay more.

I would like it if Apple had a BTO option for a DVD instead of a CDRW drive. I don't need to burn CDs with my laptop and it would nice to save a few $'s.

[quote] The only thing I would modify is to make Airport standard across the line (Anyone know the cost to Apple for Airport cards? Must be negligible, right?).

I betcha that it pays apple to have airport cards built-in. I'd imagine that their cost would be between 50-70 bucks, but if one of my macs came with an airport card, I would be more tempted to buy the base or more cards. Of course now that I think of it, I'd buy cheaper third party cards and bases.

    Ahhh . . . I really dunno.

This is upsetting news (rumors) for me. I want to buy a PowerBook in early fall/ late summer, but I want it to last throughout my four years in college. If I buy in May, I have a laptop for the start of college but if i wait til October, I run the risk of Apple not even updating it then. I might even have to wait until MWSF 2003! I don;t think I could deal with buying a $3000 computer and then having it updated with a 25% increase in processor clock speed 5 months later (more importantly, only 1 month of actual use since college starts in september). Decisions-Decisions. What shall I do! What shall I do?

I still think we'll see 733 and 867 MHz. I also doubt they will jack up the low end price.

Other than that Applenut, I think your predictions are probably what we'll see.

First of all, I'd like to start out by saying: . Then I'd like to tell you that I can't help but when I hear this sort of thing. You're going  and  over such a trivial little guess by some kid about when and how much a computer manufacturer is going to upgrade their model of laptop. It's not like it's life or death. out. I think we'll see it sooner rather than later, along with an iBook with Sahara, maybe even at 800Mhz, too.

Where does it say that the 7445 tops out at 800 MHz?

Well buddy, I applaud your analyzation skills. How many years of high school English did you take? Oh- that's right.. you slept through the vocabulary part thus not knowing "melodrama" when you see it. The entire dilemma was thought out rationally- not emotionally, buddy. Only the last sentence contained "heightened emotion" so it should clue you in that while the sentence fits with the paragraph, it doesn't fit as well. Melodrama- exaggerated behavior or emotional displays. THINK before you flame- even mildly.

While applenut simply stated rumors, I went as far as predicting what would happen if his rumors weren't true. THAT is my dilemma. Should I wait and gamble or buy and gamble. PLUS, $3,000 is A LOT of money for a kid to have seriously outdated components (newer option available from Apple I mean) only a few months after buying it.

How much does Apple have to change to warrant a whole new model? Suppose Apple increases processor speeds 25%+, and DDR ram, and increases screen resolution, and introduces built-in Bluetooth, and offers a DCD-RW drive? Would all this be done in TiBook rev(s) or does Apple introduce The Next Big Thing??

When Jobs introduced the TiBook he said it had "sex". It does, but at this point it needs more muscle.

computers get updated allllllllll the time. if you buy a pc now, then next month it will be out dated. you got to jump in sometime.

i would suggest that you wait for the next update. it will most likely be before september and should be a pretty good update.

i do agree that $3000 is a lot of money and i don't blame you. i would agree with you if i was in your situation (not as angry, though). if you wait for the next update, you won't be sorry

I for one will be waiting until after MWNY to by me TiBook. That is unless Apple releases their update before then. I sure hope the new revision will keep the glowing Apple logo behind the screen. I sure don't want to see a chrome Apple symbol like seen on the new iMac and the new 23inch display.

    what do I expect? Ummm.....

    1. 1600x1024 15.2" screen. just the same res. as the gorgeous SGI 1600SW LCD display.

    2. more advanced fabricated PowerPC G4, say 0.15 fabrication. IMHO, the current Powerbook G4 generates too much heat.

    3. move the optical drive to the right, just like the ice iBook.

    4. move the ports of firewire, USB, ethernet, blah, blah, blah,,, to the left, just like the ice iBook.

    5. as for graphic chip, ATi radeon mobility 7500 with 32 MB DDR would be nice.

    6. with 2 MB L3-cache.

    7. all the others can go with the current PowerBook G4 design.

    8. Oooops, if the entrance level PowerBook G4 will cost under 2000 bucks will be even better.

    I think Apple will have a 667 and 733 and 800.

The case will be modified but not an entire new design.

They have to deal with heat and i'm sure soemone has a new venting/fan config that will cause some appearance differences on the outside of the case.

I would also bet that the PC card slot get a slight modification to avoid the internal Airport wire.

    A new "rubber feet" design.

New hing design to avoid cracks.

new airport antennae design that externalized on the skin of he Tibook.

    More expensive RAM

A Ti version of the Ice power adapter.

    ADC video.

new keyboard color, and a built in LED worklight.

    Better microphone placement.

    A textured trackpad button. (dimpled)

New keyboard layout that has more keys in same space or a slightly larger keyboard overall.

new battery technology. Lithium Ion or whatever is next.

    Better resolution screen. More VRAM.

But overall, still hard for to tell the difference externally from an old 400 TiBook.

How about a light ring arounf the slot loading CD-DVD drive han a disc is loaded/unloaded.

    Like the power supply.

    I guess i'm done.

Great post Masker. I agree. Although I'm not sure about 3 models. I'm still betting on 733 and 867 MHz. The light ring around the CD/DVD drive would be awesome if it was super thin, and had the light blue color of the sleep light. I doubt it would put much of a strain on the battery, especially since the battery will probably be next gen.
