I was eagerly looking forward to not being blitzed by personalized ads while on Facebook and Instagram. This is bullshit.
I was eagerly looking forward to the tech industry changing so that companies aren't forced to turn to customer data monetization in order to make a go of it. They can do it based on the merits and value of their technology alone.
They were never forced to work this way, it was just easier than making a product that people actually would be willing to pay for.
And that's the core of my argument. There are so many products and services created which could never stand on their own. They're artificially supported by data monetization. Just because you build it doesn't mean it has right to be supported financially. That's something for the market to decide. That's essentially what a lot of these companies are trying to argue.
This is not a reduction of privacy for normal users, only for beta users and only for a short amount of time.
The battles with Epic and regulators weakened Apple. Apple cannot fight all sides, and every battle at once.
Apple wasn't weakened by Epic or regulators. That's silly. Apple has internal and external legal representation. They can fight as many battles as they need to fight. They made a conscious decision to appease the dev community. No sense trying to portray Apple as down trodden waif being bullied. Apple is a behemoth with considerable might. Pretty sure they are going to figure out a way for the devs to continue to thrive on the App Store, thus allowing the App Store to continue to thrive filled with apps. The App Store/dev relationship is symbiotic. One can't survive without the other.
Ever hear the term, death of a thousand cuts? Every organization only has a finite number of resources. Each person only has a finite number of hours they live, in which they have to sleep, eat, work and if they can, play. Not a single organization can fight every battle. That is why you are told to pick and choose your battles.
Takes those thousand, and about a gazillion more cuts to wear down Apple, though. You'd run out of people finding it worth making those cuts before Apple run out of resources to handle them.
Apple should NOT be caved in by those ad fuckers who concern about ad revenues bullshit. We don’t WANT any ad to snoop into our personal business. We do NOT want to see what they suggest based on what we surf on website, email, etc, etc.
They need to take their noses off our assholes and sniff into their own assholes! They should of RESPECT our personal privacy! They keep their own secrets and private to theirselves. We respect their top secret and/or private trade. They should respect our secret or private business!!!

Generic figures of speech aren't a substitute for a sound logical argument. Nothing about your response makes any sense at all. They aren't a mom and pop shop where everyone has "10 job mon" ←said with a bad Jamaican accent. In what world would Apple be unable to function properly on multiple fronts? Certainly not this one.

Not at the same time.
Thing is, at a certain stage the coordinated "attack" on Apple would become too ridiculous for the legal/political system to not sort of bulge and contort.
There's just this basic concept of being able to mount a fair and reasonable legal defence, and that right is/will be protected; and the legal system will autocorrect/throttle, as it will be both overloaded and having to wait for the outcome of other processes before they're able to proceed with what's going on in their courts.

Apple will be good.
I never said coordinated and I'm not saying this will be the end of Apple. I'm saying Apple can't attack all the battles at once. Nobody has lost any privacy over this, except beta users and Apple will be implementing this.
You have a few countries investigating Apple. Laws are changing. You have to keep most developers and users happy. You drop a ton of good users and developers, you are done.
This really is baffling. Is Apple really going to side with the advertising world over its customer base? Just allow the user to make the decision. It’s as easy as that.
While I would personally like to see the door immediately slammed shut in the faces of ad merchants, it's not unheard of for a platform owner to deprecate features, actual APIs, and defacto APIs prior to killing them off. I hope that this move by Apple is a clear signal of "you've been warned" and "your days are numbered" to the ad monsters. Apple is in a sensitive position right now because they truly want to continue to build out their ecosystem, which by definition requires third party engagement, but they don't want to be forced into becoming a public utility by the sheer size, weight, and (developer mindshare) domination of their platform.
To some degree Apple is a victim of their own success. They started off with what are now obviously, to Apple, some overly liberal ways for third parties to participate in the ecosystem. Apple realizes now that to protect their reputation for quality, privacy, security, and integrity they need to plug some holes that third party participation introduces. Apple may wish now that they had tighter licensing arrangements in place to only allow fully compliant and compatible partners who share the same values that Apple holds into their fold. The problem is that kicking the miscreants like Facebook off their island won't go well at this point in time. Zuckerberg would squeal like a stuck pig, and unfortunately he's a pig with a lot of cash and would undoubtedly cozy up with other politicians and power brokers who are willing to be his friend as long as he brings his money to the relationship.
So yeah, Apple has to play nice, let things cool off a bit, consider some less heavy handed approaches, and hope that the new spring brings new hope and possibilities for reasonable people to once again engage in reasonable conversations that allow everyone to walk away with a reasonable level of satisfaction. The current environment and mindset of "you must die for me to win" that has become the norm needs to be exorcized from our social and business culture. Let's see what Tim & Co. can come up with before digging in for another round of trench warfare against ... what ultimately becomes ourselves, i.e., the decimation of our collective physical and mental wellbeing.
Advertising is one of the biggest public nuisances, a massive waste of materials/resources, and it almost never gets called out by anyone... because everything is about advertising!!!!
I don’t give a dogdamned frell about these frelling advertising companies and their self-entitled whining. They’ve driven us to this point. Any losses on their part are ENTIRELY SELF-INFLICTED.
Apple, would you rather face a backlash from advertisers or your end-users?
Most end users know nothing about it to begin with. They are also happy to use great apps that don't cost money out of pocket. AI members are the most hardcore faithful so of course the concerns posted here may not be typical of Apple fans as a whole.
WTF? Why isn't Apple going ahead with this irrespective of what developers are whining about? They are already doing that with their fees on the app store.
I see folk are getting themselves worked up over nothing.
The new opt-in stuff has been delayed to give developers time to implement calls through the SKAdNetwork framework. Apple regularly delays changes like this if developers tell them they haven’t had time to implement them.
Some folk seem to think opting out means they won’t see ads in apps. Nope, it simply means the ads you see won’t be be targeted at you.

A handful of large, vocal developers are whining about it. The rest …?
I’ll add my $.02 and say that I agree with my esteemed colleagues. And I’ll add that the “delay” may just last a very long time. It’s so sad to see the big A cowtow to advertisers like this. So much for trying to create the best user experience.

You are right on it being a public nuisance, however I think you are wrong on it being a massive waste of materials/resources. If that were true then it wouldn’t exist. I guess those flyers and e-junk generate enough traffic that make it worthwhile. Kind of like the Nigerian prince scheme. Most people know it’s a scam but enough people fall for it to make it worthwhile.
I wouldn’t be completely shocked if this news is true and Apple is siding with these business models. There is a TON of money changing hands out there. For me it’s like the US tax code. The tax code could be rewritten to eliminate the complexity overnight. But you’ll never see it happen because not only would an entire government agency be gutted but all the tax lawyers and accountants would be out of work.

Apple: No
Facebook: Please allow us to spy on your users
Apple: Sure
