Netflix raises monthly price of standard plan to $13.99, premium to $17.99

Netflix on Thursday raised the price of its standard and premium plans to $13.99 and $17.99, representing a hike of $1 and $2, respectively.

The streaming giant last raised the prices of its plans in Jan. 2019, bumping the cost for the standard subscription to $12.99 and its premium subscription to $15.99, respectively. That pricing remained in effect until Oct. 29, 200.

Effective Thursday, the new pricing of $13.99 and $17.99 a month kicks in. The basic plan, which only includes support for non-HD 480p streaming on a single device, remains priced at $8.99 a month.

The standard plan allows streaming quality of up to 1080p and simultaneous viewing on up to two screens or devices. The premium plan supports 4K resolutions, HDR, and streaming to up to four screens at the same time.

Netflix's share price rose 5.24% on the new pricing, reaching an intraday high of $510.29 as of 3:30 p.m. Eastern (12:30 p.m. Pacific).

This article is incorrect . Netflix Premium 4K UHD previously cost $15.99.

LOL. When I last did the disc thing, there was an up-charge for access to Blu-Ray.

Journalism is not what it used to be, I’m pretty sure they did not have Internet back in the year 200. And also, the Premium plan was raised by two dollars, not three dollars.

The answer is don’t keep Netflix for all 12 months of the year. There is plenty of content but the number of quality shows I really intend to watch is limited enough that I can see it all while only carrying Netflix for four or five months of the year.

Here in Canada, Amazon Prime and Apple TV+ make more sense as year-round services on account of they are charging far less for their product delivered at the best quality (i.e. 4K with HDR and/or Dolby Vision). If you want 4K and HDR from Netflix, you have to sign up for the top tier, even if you don’t need the capability of streaming four items at once.

So right now, it’s year-round for Prime and TV+ but occasional subscription to Netflix. I refuse to pay roughly $230 a year to Netflix alone which is significantly more than Prime and TV+ combined. If Prime and TV+ spike their fees considerably, then I’ll do the same with them. I refuse to pay progressively more. Period.

When I canceled my subscription a couple of months ago you still had to pay extra for Blu-Ray rentals. I was also tired of the fact that the majority of the movies I grew up on were not available through streaming, that you had to pay extra for a DVD or Blu-Ray plan to view them. If that’s the case I’ll just check the disc out at my local library for FREE.

Of course! Just cancelled Hulu and restarted Netflix a couple days ago. Probably keeping it only a 2-3 months. We'll stick with HBO Max & Prime, and maybe add TV+ early next year.

Pretty sure if you subscribe to TV+ before the end of this month, you’ll get it for free until February.

I canceled Netflix last year for like a month and then restarted it. I do need to reevaluate whether I’m going to keep it. I’m on the standard plan now and I end up watching it maybe once a week. There are a few series I watched though. Got into the Umbrella Academy and Cobra Kai recently. I have one, 4K TV and an Apple TV 4K. My other stuff is all 1080p at best.

Not sure why the stock price would rise, am sure there’s many like me taking a look at the price rise and deciding to downgrade to 2 devices.

I must say I find Netflix better value than AppleTV+ though, but ATV+ annual subscription was probably worth it for Mythic Quest alone imho.

Yeah, I’m starting to consider other options. The only thing I’ve really watched in the last few months was the second season of The Umbrella Factory Academy. This price hike might push me over the edge to cancelling.

I'm fed up with these yearly increases and am now thinking of cancelling. A lot of the shows I used to watch are now on competing platforms and Netflix's pricing is moving very close to what I used to pay for basic Satellite TV, certainly not the cheap and cheerful option they used to be.

I am considering to do the same exact thing. I've been having a hard time finding something to watch and the series, I do watch are either over or the next season is delayed, e.g. Manhunter. May just pause the subscription until there's some new content to binge.

Also thanks to this article I just dropped my 4K back to standard. Didn't see enough of an improvement to pay the extra $$. I'll let the TV scale it up.
