University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of California Santa Cruz and Irvine, University of Southern California and Purdue University.
Emphatically = go to Santa Cruz!!!!!!!
(I went there as an undergrad)
It is supposedly one of the centers of immunology now (not when I went there) and it is the most beautiful campus ever!!!! Nesteld in the redwoods and just up the hill from the Pacific Ocean --students would surf in the morning and study Aristotle in the afternoon!!
You will get a real social life that is, in itself, an education . . . though most people tend to be very experimental . . . they can also be ideological in a lefty sort of way . . . . But there are all sorts of people there . . .
Good grief. So much resentment towards social drinking. Frats and sororities (and eating clubs) aren't all the MTV icons that you hope they are. So yeah, i went out to the club tonight, played some pool, drank some beer, and talked to some friends. If i did these things on my own it would be harder to organize and would actually cost more. It's nice having a cost effective, easy-access hangout.
Anyway, 30% isn't much. That means that the vast majority of students aren't involved in this sort of thing. At Princeton, I think over 80% of students (who are eligible -- ie upperclassmen) are in eating clubs. As I said, it's not the debauchery you hope it is. And even if it were, there's a time and a place. College tends to be both of these.
Don't worry about. Most of your schools are large enough for it not to matter. I can't remember any of my friends being in "frats" ect. My wife was/is APX but she's a freak.
UVA is horrible. The people that go to school there are the snobbiest pact of asshole around. If you want to hang out with a bunch of upper middle class assholes from NoVA then go to UVA

UIUC is the way to go. It's better than UVA unless you want to major in snorting coke and date rape.

BEST QUOTES EVER!!!!
But I gotta say, I would choose UVA (and I go to UVA's rival). It is not as good in engineering as say, Virginia Tech, but it does have an excellent medical school. (Their hospital is suspect though--known for accidentally switching babies).
The type of people who go to UVA are snobby. The thing is, however, they are not going to be snobby towards you if you go there. If you go there, you are one of them, and that's what they respect. They look down on people from other schools, no matter what school.
NOVA stands for Northern Virginia. People from NOVA are assholes and definitely try to separate themselves from the rest of the state. They see themselves as better than the rest.
Virginians are not super-conservative, prejudiced people. I go to Virginia Tech which is in the western part of the state (more rural, which probably means more conservative) and there are PLENTY of international students and asian students. Virginians have no problem with that at all.
Ok, I've narrowed my choices down to Oberlin and UVa.
I have a question concerning majors. When I was applying to some schools, I chould choose 'Neurobiology' as an undergraduate major. However, at UVa, 'Biology' is the name of the major and there doesn't seem to be more specialised majors.
I want to know if there is a lot of difference between a 'Neurobiology' major and a Biology one. It seems to me that for undergraduate, neurobiology would seem too specialised, but I know that's what I want to do.
Also, does anyone know which school is better for biolgy?
But I gotta say, I would choose UVA (and I go to UVA's rival). It is not as good in engineering as say, Virginia Tech,
AND Physics.

One interesting difference between Tech and that other place is that at Tech "townies" like the VaTech students and at whatsitschool the townies hate the students.
I would never suggest going to a small private undergraduate school like Oberlin if you want to go into a field like neurobiology. I'd go to a research institution, like Virginia, which has a doctoral program in the field you're interested in. You can work with faculty who are much more active in research, who have graduate students with whom you can also work, and who as recommenders will be well-known by the people you want to impress when you go on in your field. I doubt the faculty at Oberlin will be as well-known in your field.
I admit that I'm biased against small private schools, but my bias is due to the reasons above. Some people will say that you'll get a better education at a small private school, and that might be true for some, but I think for someone who is interested in advanced study in a field like biology, you'd be better off going to a school that actually has a reputation in the field. Virginia does, Oberlin does not, relatively speaking. These private schools often make a point of saying that they involve students in research, and that's true, but often the research is just not of as high a caliber - it's often "student" level research.
You also might want to look up 'neuroscience' at Virginia, rather than 'neurobiology,' because I know they have a huge neuroscience program there. Neuroscience is more of an interdisciplinary field, with biology, psychology, psychiatry, medicine, etc. all involved.
I worked in a lab at VaTech. They guy I worked for had a long history in particle physics so when I applied for a summer job at Fermilab I was a lock (plus I'm good) and that's where I learned about radiation therapy ... and ...
Now I'm at U of Michigan and we hire a lot of undergraduates. One is applying for medical school, one who started years ago just finished her PhD ...
DO look into UIUC. Great school. Maybe better that UVA in many areas. When I was at VaTech someone mentioned that they had gotten into UIUC and we were like "WTF are you doing here?"

But guys! I still don't understand the quintessence of this whole frat/sor greek program thing!!!
Please explain!!!!!
Again, is it something bad, worth avoiding and easy to avoid?
Thanks guys.
