New Eve Room air quality monitor with Thread support debuts

On Tuesday, Eve announced the HomeKit-compatible third-generation Eve Room with support for Thread, the emerging home automation connectivity standard.

Thread support aside, the latest generation Eve Room has the same functionality and design as the previous iteration. It has a small 2.1-inch by 2.1-inch body with an anodized exterior frame and a 200x200 pixel e-ink display.

It is capable of measuring VOC levels, temperature, and humidity in your home and works exclusively with Apple HomeKit. It will communicate over Thread when available but will fall back to Bluetooth if it must. Its built-in battery will last six weeks on a single charge over micro USB.

Eve's adoption of Thread has continued to increase with the third-generation Eve Room joining the Eve Energy, Eve Door & Window, and the Eve Aqua among others with support.

Thread is a new smart home connectivity standard that is able to create a mesh network between products that is ultra-low power, self-healing, and battery efficient. Apple supports Thread with the current HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K.

The updated Eve Room is available starting today for $99.

    I own Eve Motion and Eve Weather.   I'm really happy with Eve Motion and its HomeKit integration (I turn on some lights when motion is detected).   Eve Weather was a bit more of a disappointment: its exterior aluminum body is *so nice* - feels like something Apple would have produced and much nicer than Eve Motion's white plastic shell - but its screen (also eInk, I believe) is very hard to read, especially outside, the place it's designed to be :-(  It wouldn't be so bad if all its measurements were available in the Home app, but, alas, they're not.  According to the Eve folks, HomeKit doesn't allow them to report barometric pressure in the Home app.  Well, this happens to be the measurement I'm most interested in - and I have to open the Eve app to see it.

    To make a long story short, I wonder if the same is true for Eve Room - are all its measurements available in the Home app?  On the other hand, I guess other than humidity, VOC levels or temperature wouldn't  lend lend themselves to automation (at least not in a house that already has central heating/AC)?

    Actually I can see a good reason for VOC automation...turning your air purifier on or off.

    Apple’s Home App is pretty basic and has several limitations. It also has some benefits in that it can access HomePods and AppleTVs. As for the reporting of barometric pressure this is actually done over HomeKit, it’s just the Home App does display it. Just like the Eve App, the Home+ App is able to read over HomeKit barometric pressure and you can create automations using it (also based in HomeKit).

    For Eve Room all 3 measurements are available in Apple’s Home App for use, so no concerns there for you. I’ve been waiting for Thread versions of many of the Eve devices before investing further and the Eve Room has been on that list.

    I really wish they would update their Smoke Alarm with Thread because the Smoke and Heat detection options in it make it virtually the only “smart” option for use in a kitchen area, and I also wish they would provide 2 power options (mains and/or battery) so that it complies with our fire safety regulations for houses with more than 2 floors.

    In summary, if you want far more power from HomeKit move away from Apple’s Home App.
