Apple holds premiere for climate change drama 'Extrapolations'

Ahead of its streaming debut, Apple TV+ hosted a world premiere of "Extrapolations" in Los Angeles, with its all-star cast and crew.

"Extrapolations" writer/creator Scott Z. Burns

Apple TV+ was first reported to be working on what would become its eight-episode climate change drama, "Extrapolations," in 2020. Created by writer/director Scott Z. Burns, it's an anthology series which starts streaming from March 17, 2023.

Burns attended the premier at the Hammer Museum in LA, accompanied on the red carpet by a slew of stars including Kit Harington, Sienna Miller, Tobey Maguire, and Heather Graham.

The series is an anthology, but the separate stories are interwoven across eight episodes written by Burns, Rajiv Joseph, Bess Wohl, Ron Currie, and the writing team of Dorothy Fortenberry & Diane Ademu-John. Author Dave Eggers has provided a story for one episode.

"'Extrapolations' is a bracing limited series," says Apple in a statement, "that introduces a near future where the chaotic effects of climate change have become embedded into our everyday lives."

"Eight interwoven stories about love, work, faith and family from across the globe will explore the intimate, life-altering choices that must be made when the planet is changing faster than the population," Apple continues. "Every story is different, but the fight for our future is universal."

The cast for the eight episodes also includes Diane Lane and Judd Hirsch.

Extrapolating is about the only thing the global warming cabal has been doing the past thirty years; and getting it wrong every time.

One has only to look back at numerous predictions from “experts” going back to the 70’s that to see that the doomsday scenarios never quite pan out. Just look at all of Al Gores predictions, for example.

Simply put, this is what happened: Three and a half billion years ago life formed on earth on this planet. The carbon life forms evolved over millions of years, living and dying over the millennia, and buried underground, fossilised in deep storage. This removed carbon from the atmosphere, creating the oxygen-rich conditions for the preponderance of biodiversity and the glorious natural world that we exploit and wantonly destroy today. Since the industrial revolution, humans have been extracting those fossil fuels and burning them — returning the carbon to the atmosphere at an unprecedented rate. And scientists (including those employed by the fossil fuels industry) have been warning that nothing good would come from that. Since the 1970s, tens of thousands of scientists have contributed to our understanding of the problem. Hundreds of satellites have been launched to study the earth’s atmospheric system, hundreds of thousands of scientific studies and doctoral theses have looked at every aspect of the problem — the chemistry of our atmosphere, the role of the oceans, the sun, the magnetosphere, the world’s biodiversity, the oceans, the role of algae, forests etc. etc. etc., They have come up with climate ‘models’ — essentially, the synthesis of all the data, accumulated by scientists over half a century or more of studying the problem, which have been entered into ever more powerful computers. (And if you have any doubts you are welcome to devote ten years of your life to become an expert in a relevant field [4 years bachelor, 2 years master, 4 years PhD] then get the funding to set up a laboratory to replicate their studies, and if you dispute them, you may publish your findings in reputed journals that are peer reviewed by the best minds in the field, and then wait for the response of your peers in the field.) Because remember this: there is no greater thrill for a scientist than to find error in the work of their peers.

So, according to yank-servatives, it is the scientists who are a ‘cabal,’ and not the chicken-sh*t corporate execs who lie and spread disinformation via ‘think-tanks’ and ‘propagandist media outlets,’ so that their profits may continue unabated, and they may enrich themselves even more. Because change is tough and, after all, an oil guy knows one thing — how to extract and refine petroleum, and nothing else.

None of what you said negates the fact that climate predictions have been consistently wrong for a long time.

Specific predictions of the future are almost always wrong.  The overall direction of climate predictions is very much correct though.

Nothing of what you say negates the science, nor on the facts. Americans have proven to be stubbornly resistant to facts and science, as you are in the centre of a propaganda storm emanating from powerful capitalist interests. You are easily swayed by arguments about ‘cabals’ and ‘Hollywood elites’ (as if actors are elites!) and happy to focus on ‘hypocrisy’ and so forth. Thus, you buy time for the climate criminals. You, like me, know what's really going on — hence someone’s “yawn” above. But you give the criminals a pass, because your tribe has managed to turn your gaze away from the manifest problems, towards a culture war — like the argument over household gas stoves. Idiocracy, the movie, was mean to be satire, not prediction.

The extrapolations in "Extrapolations" is more about predicting how life and culture will work 20, 30, 50 years down the road. That's pretty hard to do. They will definitely get things right and wrong. They will show incessant heat, but people just don't truly understand what heat is going to do until they live it. It's going to be bad.

Global warming projections are a straight application of heat transfer physics, from 100 years ago when people were just doing 1 dimensional equilibrium calculations to today, where global climate models are applying Navier-Stokes equations over a planet-wide discretization of the Earth's atmosphere with land forms, ocean currents, solar activity are all modeled, and are able to predict temperatures year by year. No extrapolation here. It's just an application of heat transfer physics. The same that are used to design Apple's computers, to ovens, to engines, etc.

Not trusting heat transfer physics is tantamount to saying the Earth is flat, perpetual motion machines work, etc.
