Apple Vision Pro is revolutionizing surgical procedures worldwide

As surgeons in other countries get a chance to work with the Apple Vision Pro, they are seeing it as a revolutionary tool -- and a big improvement on previous headsets.

Three healthcare professionals in blue scrubs and protective gear operating surgical equipment in a medical setting.

Following examples in the US of the Apple Vision Pro being used in surgeries, a new example has come to light from Brazil. The headset was used in a shoulder arthroscopy procedure dealing with a rupture of the rotator cuff.

The operation, reported on by MacMagazine, was performed in Jaragu do Sul in Santo Domingo. Dr. Bruno Gobbato and his team typically peform this type of operation looking at a screen anyway, using a camera inserted into the injured area.

Gobbato had previously used Microsoft's HoloLens to perform such surgeries. However, the cameras in the Apple Vision Pro had a much higher resolution and better handling of the bright lights focused on the patient's shoulder.

"Shoulder arthroscopy surgery uses a camera inside the joint and surgeons perform it by looking directly at a screen," Dr. Gobbato said. "With this device, I was able to see the image on the size of a movie screen with high resolution, as well as being able to see the patient's exams and 3D models in real time."

He has posted a video of the surgery on YouTube, with the procedure highly sped-up to demonstrate the perspective of a surgeon using the Apple Vision Pro. Gobbato was able to clearly see his notes, the patient's x-rays, and the live camera all at the same time.

Also employed during the surgery was an app called MyMako. It's a 3D program that allows doctors to create models of what they will be doing in the surgery beforehand, and have those models in 3D available to them during the actual procedure.

Despite being used for surgeries previously in the UK, and now Brazil, the Apple Vision Pro is currently only purchasable in the US. Availability in other countries, likely including China, is expected to be announced soon.

Can we just take a chill pill on the hyperbole

The headline is totally misleading. We have ONE guy using it.

The last paragraph says very clearly it’s being used more: “ Despite being used for surgeries previously in the UK, and now Brazil,”. Surgeries plural in the UK.

Several years ago, Tim Cook began to say that… “The biggest influence of Apple will be on heart.”
I… as almost everyone… thought he was referring to the Apple Watch or Fitness…
But maybe he already knew something else!

"Despite being used for surgeries previously " - previously being the operative word

You really should try reading the whole article before commenting. Not doing so makes you and your comment look stupid.

Yes, that clearly means that doctors used the AVP for surgeries in the past, and will never use it ever again in the present or future. LOL

Keep digging ... maybe you'll reach China!

Use and feedback from smart talented people using the Apple Vision will help Apple enormously in the process of OS software/program software and hardware iteration over time.

How long before Apple no longer requires us average consumers to hit record profits? When will Apple decide to create a certified medical division that sell worldwide to registered surgeons "in good standing", an entire ecosystem of Vision Pro + HD Displays Microled + Online secure storage + computers/tablet/iPhone/other making surgeries better and safer and hopefully more efficient so more people can have access without waiting lines for decades. If surgeons can see potential in underdeveloped areas then will Apple open DEV support to them? Imagine if Apple Watches can automatically do 24hr/day monitoring of post surgical clients sending secure reports to the surgical followup team and family doctor. We may be on the cusp of the next wave of medical care and not even realise it yet.

So, in other words, one person in the UK has used it for multiple surgeries. ........

I find it curious - if it is true - that surgeons are using an unlicensed (it doesnt even have regulatory approve for consumer use let alone for medical use) and unsupported (you cant walk into an apple store when it has a fault outside the US) products for something as critical as surgery outside the USA..

Imagine the legal liabilities involved if a patient was harmed /died in surgery and it transpired the surgeon was wearing this.

Talk about massive legal red flags.

That all depends on what it's being used for.

No, it isn't incorrect.  Saying that it has been used in multiple surgeries in the UK does not mean that multiple medical doctors have done the surgeries.  You can have one doctor that has used it in multiple surgical operations.   That should be self-evident to anyone who doesn't have a poor grasp of the English language.

You do realize that AVP hasn't been out very long, right? It'll take time for full studies for to be completed and written up. But that link shows a clear interest.

Your comments remind me of when ApplePay was launched and people complained that they couldn't use it everywhere instantly which was proof that ApplePay was a sham. Things take time, even in this modern age where we all expect everything to happen instantly.

OR... you could read the WHOLE article which includes detailed specifics about why AVP is revolutionary for performing arthroscopic surgery and understand how these advantages are immediately applicable to the millions of arthroscopic procedures worldwide that are performed each year. But, yes, this does require reading and comprehension, so I expect you'll just continue lobbing nonsense from the peanut gallery.
