iPhone 16 Pro hands on: All the new titanium colors

It's 2024 iPhone launch day, and we got our hands on all the new iPhone 16 Pro colors to compare. Here's what they're like outside of Apple's pristine marketing images.

The new finishes for iPhone 16 Pro

This year's batch of iPhone 16 Pro phones technically received four new finishes, but the most notable is the Desert Titanium that has replaced the outgoing blue hue.

Now the four titanium colors in the range are the aforementioned Desert, White, Black, and Natural. Let's take a closer look.

Naturally, everyone is going to have their favorite -- although Tim Cook would again probably praise all of them equally -- but personally, we're loving the new white one. It's much brighter and cleaner than before.

The new white is very bright and clean

It's been ages since we've actually seen a true white for the Pro models, which makes it even more welcome. It harkens back to the days of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, and we're here for it.

On this white model, the sides are bright silver that have a uniform matte finish. That compares nicely to the brush look last year or the glossy ones we saw prior to that.

Next we have the natural titanium, which, frankly, matches the last model almost exactly. We compared these in the Apple Store and it was maybe a hair darker.

Just to prove the point, we photographed the iPhone 15 Pro Max in natural titanium. It's indistinguishable from the iPhone 16 Pro Max, at least in color. Obviously the new model has the Camera Control button, but it's the same color as last year's version.

Despite our preference for white, it's probably desert titanium that is the most interesting, or at least the most anticipated, because it is the only wholly new color in the range.

"Desert" is a good name. But we'd describe it more as titanium with a slight copper tint.

It looks great overall, however, and it can also be very subtle depending on the lighting. In the Apple Store's bright lights, for instance, we couldn't even identify the desert titanium model until it was next to the others.

The desert titanium color is more subtle in some light than others

Back in the studio, though, it became much more apparent under natural lighting. Warm light brings out the warm hues of the Desert Titanium finish.

So it's new, it's subtle, and it looks great. We can easily see why so many people have gravitated to this new option.

The new black titanium iPhone 16 Pro Max
The black is darker than before

Finally, there was the new black titanium. In a similar way to the white model, Apple took an existing color and improved rather than changed it.

So now the black titanium iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max is a true black. It's no longer the dark gray color it was before.

The lighter lineup of iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max

All of these colors look and feel quite premium, if a bit muted. Apple seemingly doesn't believe that what it calls Pro devices should come in vivid colors.

Instead, colors are more the preserve of the regular models. So where the iPhone 16 Pro range comes in three muted colors, the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus come in ultramarine blue, teal, pink, white, and black.

Following both the "It's Glowtime" announcement and the pre-order week, all of the iPhone 16 range -- regular and Pro -- is now available to order immediately. It's also all now in Apple Stores around the world.

Didn’t the fear mongers suggest Desert was going to be Zune (poop) brown? Oops. They never learn

I transitioned from the Pixel 7 to the iPhone 15 Pro last year. I throughly enjoyed the Pixel line of phones: 5,6,7. The reason that I switched is security. No other reason. I don't really like the way the iPhone works. Everything is a struggle. Syncing movies, tunes, pics across. Nothing.
But I now have an iPhone. So I figured another year hopefully the OS will get better and the phone experience will be better. I purchased the iPhone 16 Pro. The migration from 15 Pro to the 16 Pro was a nightmare. The swirly bubble on the 16 did not align with the 15 so I clicked on the option to Set it Up Manually. It took 5 minutes to complete. So that was a plus. But my Gmail, phone carrier and banking app would not work. Period. I spent an hour on the phone with a senior Apple adviser. Nothing accomplished.
The strange thing is that when I transitioned from the Pixel 7 to the iPhone 15 Pro it went like a charm. No issues. No hassles.
However, when I attempted to transition from iPhone 15 Pro to iPhone 16 Pro it was a mess and a nightmare.
I am on the phone now with Apple to arrange for a return of the iPhone 16 Pro.
And that too is taking an inordinate amount of time.
Apple has become too big for its britches and can no longer manage simple matters like transitions from one current phone model to another phone model.

Sad. Next upgrade will be from the iPhone 15 Pro to the Pixel Fold. I don't really need or use the banking app.

Of course, the fact that there are no widespread reports of this strongly suggests the problem—whatever it is because you provide no specifics—lies with you. Upgrading from last year’s iPhone to the newest model is literally as easy as backing up to iCloud first and then putting the two phones side-by-side. Done. And I do this every year, including this year, on the iPhone Upgrade program. Oh, by the way: Apple doesn’t have a “banking app.”

Let me try to understand your situation better. You had many issues with iPhone 15 pro, yet decided to buy iPhone 16 pro? That too, knowing that iPhone 15 Pro will get software updates for at least another 5 years, including the AI features. Majority of the iPhone users who love their iPhones do NOT upgrade to the latest version every year. Yet, you upgraded to latest iPhone within 1 year, despite not liking the previous iPhone.

And your reason for switching from Pixel to iPhone was security. That too when both phones are equally secure, but reason is not Privacy (a feature which Pixel does not have, but iPhone has)? And you are planning to switching back to Pixel again. Is it because Pixel magically got the security that you thought did not exist previously? Seriously, do you think anyone would believe all of this?

Buyer beware: the desert color is a salmon/pink, almost no bronze or tan like most pics show as I was hoping for a steampunk trim. Perfect for chicks who wanted a rose gold. I returned mine for a black one and it was 2 hours on the phone with AT&T.

Nah. There are no iPhone 16 Pro colors. It's just black, white, grey, brown.

You are right. The chances for anything to be truly black look really dark. But exactly how dark?

Since you asked: the answer is no, there was no fear-mongering. There was a strong reaction to what Apple Insider posted as supposedly leaked photos of the new color and it looked like a cross between Zune brown and the color of baby diarrhea. That’s what people commented on. Oops! Some people never learn to get the facts straight before they post.

Black isn’t even a color, and for that matter, neither is white.

To be fair though, many of the pictures that came out did look terrible, really brown. Now I always try to preface my comments to leaks and rumours with “If this is true then…” and more people probably should. But the pictures that prompted the worst comments, did look very Hershey.
