These republican politicians can go f#ck themselves. Changing a 400 year old name just to satisfy the ego of a pretend king is ridiculous and embarrassing. It will still be the Gulf of Mexico to the rest of the world..... and me.  After he's gone it will go back to the Gulf of Mexico.

Truly one of the most childish things President Moron has done.

Whenever this nation crawls out from the pile of miscreants, ignoramuses, grifters, and plain just stupid people currently attempting to run things (or just drive everything into the ground). this idiocy will dialed right back.  Of course, only American websites, and atlases will have to change.  The rest of the world hasn't lost its sanity...and it is still the Gulf of Mexico.

True, but it's also the least cruel thing he's done and one that doesn't lead to any grift of taxpayer money or selling of state secrets. With so many illegal actions it is silly that we're focusing on this name change... but maybe that's the point. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Second to last sentence: "It walks a fine line between showing the true name of the location and satisfying users that search for the term, and it may be enough."

Not sure "true name" is a good term to use in this context. I'm sure the Gulf was called something else before the Europeans arrived. So what is "true"? It depends on when you ask and which country's naming conventions you follow.

It's not because you're old, it's because you're reasonable that one person shouldn't have the power to rename oceans.

Now that inflation and the cost of living have been fully-addressed by the new administration, we can deal with this most-pressing of issue facing Americans everywhere. After this, we can finally deal with that “New Mexico” nonsense.

(Edit: That was sarcasm in case there was any confusion.)
Would renaming California "Old Mexico" help clarify?

Wait.  I have not yet thought through the implications of such a change for the immigration question.  Whatever that is

FYI: We only have 975 years left to rename New York as New New York.

Just like I still call Twitter Twitter. I closed my account months ago, but that's what I call it when I'm forced to discuss it.

The Gulf of Mexico is named after the regional name used by the Aztecs. There isn't a name before this name.

I think that we need a ‘laugh’ button instead of the new ‘dislike’ button. I’m serious.
    I like that idea.

In fact, I refuse to use the Dislike button even when disliking a comment. I'll state my issues in text instead of a silent downvote.

I am very glad they brought the dislike button back.
I refuse to justify every inane comment with a reply.

We should just call it the Gulf of the West Atlantic therefore it becomes geologically correct and isn’t supporting any country. Meanwhile the Wikipedia page is constantly fighting for and against the name change https://en.m.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Gulf_of_Mexico&action=history

They should change United States to “The Stolen Lands of the Natives”. For accuracy.
Every land had someone living on it before someone else came along. This trope has long since been played out.

LOL You sound like the kind of person that would yell at Native Americans to go back to where they came from.

Seems like you're making a funny node to Boaty McBoatface, which Colbert helped to push back on his The Colbert Report series on Comedy Central. Back in 2010 his character on that show also pushed for renaming the Gulf of Mexico the Gulf of America.

Yep, and 9 times out of ten it was natives living there and colonizers moving and saying they discovered it, labeled the locals savages, then enslaved or killed them systematically until they were practically extinct.

so yeah, played out I guess.

Apple is a global company. As such, it should use place names that are internationally recognized. If a particular country wants to unilaterally use their own nickname for a place, fill your boots. But you can’t make it change for the rest of the world.

As for the whole fascist thing. Someone once described to me that the whole left-right wing thing is a misnomer. It’s not linear as the words seem to depict. It’s referred as the horseshoe theory. Where the fascist (extreme right) is ideologically closer to the anarchist (extreme left) than they are to the centrist.

Politics and ideology aside, what I’m witnessing to the south of me (Canada) looks like the start of the fall of the American empire, and that scares me.

    You are welcome.

Definitely can't say stuff like this. Not only is it intentionally trying to start a fight, it's incredibly offensive. Please review our guidelines.

I understand. Only your side is allowed to express their opinions. I actually knew that already, I just wanted to test the waters. I’ll check back next year.
