Apple Maps paid search ads under consideration in monetization push

Apple is once again considering adding advertising to Apple Maps, a move that could help bump up its growing Services revenue even more.

Apple Maps

Apple's advertising business already serves ads for the App Store, as well as switching to an internal team for ad sales on Apple News in November. However, it may grow the ad business more by turning its attention to Apple Maps.

In Sunday's "Power On" newsletter, Bloomberg claims Apple is now thinking about ways to monetize its Maps app. In a recent Maps group all-hands meeting, Apple management confirmed that it was exploring the possibility of monetizing the app.

Exploration is not a direct confirmation that advertising will appear in the app in some way, but there are multiple ways that Apple could monetize the app.

For example, it reportedly considered charging for prioritization of search results in the app. It's also plausible that it could sell the ability to make specific locations on the map more prominent to viewers.

With Google successfully monetizing Google Maps in various ways, it's entirely plausible for Apple to do something similar for its own navigational product.

Recurring considerations

This is not the first time Apple has thought about monetizing Maps. In August 2022, a report said that engineering work was "already underway to launch search ads in the Apple Maps app."

At the time it was thought to be arriving in 2023, with search result-based ads and promoted listings among the ways Apple could earn revenue.

The move would be one way to expand its already considerable advertising business. In August 2024, it was revealed Apple had a 51% share of voice in programmatic advertising, growing 6% year-on-year.

Apple has also been looking into serving ads on Apple TV+, with the hiring of an ad executive in 2023 thought to help Apple run ads during MLS and MLB games.

As for the size of the business, it is thought to have contributed around $10 billion in advertising revenue to Apple's Services arm in 2024.

Not a lot of that from Apple since, well, you know what. Sadly.

Ugh. Apple is supposed to be a hedge against such ensh!tification, not a promoter of ensh!tification.

So I’m about to execute a tricky lane change in some unknown (to me) city when an ad pops up and covers the directions? Please no.

Apple’s not about delivering insanely great products anymore. They are about profit above all, and it’s showing.

Please, no more ads. We’re already paying a premium for Apple products and services. What would we as Apple customers get in return for renting our eyeballs to Apple’s advertisers?

At least with Facebook you’re getting to publish your personal information, photos of your kids and where they live, and your meatloaf recipe to the world. Google gives you pretty pictures of your neighbors’ backyards and front yards and ensures your inbox stays full so you can relax in the morning over a fresh cup of coffee while emptying your inbox. You never know, maybe it really is a Nigerian prince that’s going to give you a cut of his riches if you allow him to deposit 12 million dollars into your bank account.

I recently came to the realization that there is no way to block ads on Apple News, even though I’m paying for it. At least with web browsers I can use apps to block ads. Grrrr.

Whatever species that takes over after humans go extinct, which I hope doesn’t happen in the next 4 years, is going to look back at our legacy and laugh at all the punishment we subjected ourselves to just to get our meatloaf recipes published to the world.

This would be a great time to look at OpenStreetMap. It doesn't have the same map quality and coverage as Google Maps or Apple Maps, but anyone can contribute and improve it. By taking control of your mapping and using maps run by a non-profit, you can avoid enshittificaiton.

If you're looking for a user friendly app, Organic Maps is a good option.

And if your area isn't well-mapped in OSM, start contributing!

I'm amazed anyone uses Apple Maps. Nine times out of ten when I use it, it takes me to the wrong destination. Google Maps, Waze and TomTom are fast more reliable. IMO.

Maybe it's time to go back to the old fashion way, buy and use an actual paper map or atlas. At least with those, they will never need to be plugged in. Just a thought.

    Et tu, Apple?  :s

You, of all companies, are full-throttle on the path to enshitification of our digital lives?

    :'(

(bad enough that I cannot fucking opt out of those ANNOYING "hey stupid! — upgrade to Sequoia NoW!" popups. I'm a grown man, I'm WELL aware of the first TWENTY NOTICES you've given me. At this point, I probably have a GOOD FUCKING REASON not to have upgraded yet. Leave me the fuck alone.)

Why are you searching at that moment or even close to that moment?

they should add the ability for iCloud subscribers to add their own custom weighting as an upsell to get more subscribers. Instead of avoid blanket tolls highways add fine grain avoid this toll or poor highway. Favour local coffee shops over chains. Favour particular service stations and find me the best price on the way.

Reminds me of Roger Waters' 1992 album - Amused to Death.

And when they found our shadows grouped 'round the TV sets
They ran down every lead, they repeated every test
They checked out all the data on their list
And then the alien anthropologists admitted they were still perplexed
But on eliminating every other reason for our sad demise
They logged the only explanation left -
This species has amused itself to death

Rent seeking doesn't mean what you think it does. The $2 trillion U.S. tax cut from 2017 involved rent seeking.

    noun
    1. the fact or practice of manipulating public policy or economic conditions as a strategy for increasing profits.
"cronyism and rent-seeking have become an integral part of the way our biggest companies do business"
    adjective
    1. engaging in or involving the manipulation of public policy or economic conditions as a strategy for increasing profits.
      "rent-seeking lobbyists"

I merely articulated a worst case condition. I doubt Apple would be that dumb but you never know.

IDK about anyone else but I'm so sick and tired of every god damn thing having these annoying fuckin ads on them. When I wanna find directions the last thing I want is some annoying ad on the screen somewhere. IDC if it's even on the bottom...it's just distracting and unnecessary.

Four comments? I've found that in rural areas google maps has a difficult time locating proper addresses. That said, some areas are so messed up that driving directions are dangerous. The Twin Cities, MN, area are a perfect example. Some of this is because the crazy freeway designers had to have been on acid designing the mess of onramps, off-ramps and changing freeways (onramp to different freeway having to cross four lanes within an 1/8 of a mile. All mapping software seems to either tell you too early or too late where to go.

No, but I would join any campaign that would fight/protest to get rid of that requestor on the left side of the screen in maps “ called Guides” which can’t be turned off when using a M4 Pro iPad I absolutely hate it……

There’s no need to go back to the Stone Age but a basic (Thomas Guide type), no-frills map of the world would work no problem but no one today would just leave it at that they would try to do more by adding ads and unnecessary crap (Yelp) to the map.

I don’t need every little detail just the major highways and the major streets, however many people don’t see it that way they want the clutter and the Nanny built into the map.
