Apple's next rumored display move could be more than just a replacement of the Apple Studio Display. It could be planning to introduce two different models.

Apple is rumored to be working on an update to the Apple Studio Display, with a second-gen screen bringing with it a number of feature improvements. It seems it's not the only screen Apple is working on.

According to Sunday's Bloomberg newsletter, Mark Gurman believes that two versions are in development. The previously discussed model with codename J427, is being accompanied by a second, codenamed J527.

Gurman doesn't offer exactly what the second monitor will be like, but does speculate it could be for a few reasons. For a start, it's a possibility that Apple is developing two displays, and will choose one to be actually released to consumers.

The other possibility is that it is a second model of screen that will also see release. This could be one with different specifications, such as a different size to give consumers choice.

There is also the hint that it could be a replacement to the Pro Display XDR, Apple's oldest current display and also its largest. An upgrade of the model is also a possibility.

As for the J427, Gurman says it should be on the market either by the end of 2025 or early in 2026.

More display rumors

Sunday's claim is the latest about Apple's second-gen monitor releases. So far, the rumors have only revolved around one model.

Concerning the potential follow-up to the Apple Studio Display, the rumors have included assertions that Apple will switch from LED to MiniLED backlighting for improved brightness and contrast levels.

The resulting has also reportedly gone up, from a 5K Retina in the current Studio Display to possibly as high as 7K. Screen sizes have also been said to remain static, or possibly growing up to 32 inches.

ProMotion support, Thunderbolt 5, and the remote chance of a curved screen are also possibilities for a new Apple monitor.

Rumor Score: Possible

Seriously, how long can it take to release a monitor update? The existing model sits too high ... and I have been waiting a long time for one that is not ergonomically compromised.  The current height variable Studio Display only goes UP:  hopefully, Apple will figure out how to make it go down in height as well.

There’s a zillion different display options from other brands.   I’m not sure why anyone would pay premium for Apple display.   I mean how long until they release an AirPort Extreme update?  Should they?   I wish they’d cut down on how many products they offer and make the core products better, like Steve did when he returned.   The bloat is getting out of control

Unfortunately, if you want a 5K 27" Thunderbolt display with Apple's build quality and support for the OS X keyboard monitor controls, you really don't have any other choices.  I looked at all of the available options, and decided to buy a used Apple Thunderbolt display that had been discontinued for at least 5 years because it was as close as I could get for half the price (minus the retina resolution).   Samsung has a good option, but it's almost as much as the Studio display, so why not just go with the Apple display?  When I got my monitor, I couldn't afford a Studio display.  Now that I can, the Studio display will probably be my next monitor

The situation with the Airport Extreme is similar.  Lots of other options, but in my opinion, nothing that looks as good, or works as well as the Airport Extreme.  Anything else work with the Airport Utility?  I'll keep my three Airport Extreme units until they quit working, or until a new model comes out.

Some of us are very happy with our Apple branded accessories, and would like to stick with them.  I'm also glad that there are tons of other options for people who want other options.  It's a win-win if you ask me, there are options for everyone, and everyone is able to choose what is best for them.

ProMotion will be great for everyone. Gamers can feel like Apple is doing something for them, and videographers can also enjoy higher and more fluid frames.

There are a number of third party displays that will get the job done but most don't have the build quality of an Apple display. Controlling brightness as day moves to night is a huge consideration for me. The few TP displays I've used don't have the option of controlling brightness from a keyboard. This wouldn't be the only consideration but it would be big. As are controlling any other aspects from a keyboard on not via the display itself. It's been a minute since I've looked at TP displays so maybe that's change.

Then there's the build quality. Few non-Apple displays match it. Another 27" display is not on my shopping list. 30-32" is what I want from Apple with an amazing image like the XDR screen. Even the new iPad Pros have a terrific screen. C'mon Apple. Give us a 32" XDR display that doesn't cost half as much as the current XDR but is gorgeous to watch.

I would have thought they would have a new display ready for the M4 releases.  I’m ready to replace my 27” iMac with the base model Mac Studio.  I currently have a second display, which is a Samsung 27” 5K, but it was only available in mat glass, and I find everything looks a little fuzzy. I don’t want to invest in obsolete technology with the current Studio Display, although I’ve been tempted.  Instead, my stopgap is to convert the iMac to a display (directions from iFixIt:  https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Convert+an+iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2639+into+an+HDMI+Monitor/165631). I’ve found a local Mac repair shoot that will do it for 2 hours labor plus parts.  That should keep me in business until there’s an updated Studio Display.

That's what the VESA mount adapter option is for. Then get a 3rd party stand or swivel arm:

They sell this display with a mount that goes up and down. I'm not sure why this is such an issue for you. I guess maybe you want like an iMac G4 type arm which had a lot of adjustment, but was very compromised with quality issues. Those arms failed a lot.

I'd like to see them do a 27" 5K display with ProMotion with a higher brightness for the same price as the current 27" Studio Display and then take the current 27" 5K Studio Display at 60Hz and bring the price down to like $1199 or $1099, maybe even $999.

One of those suspected monitors may in fact be a new iMac model.

Yes and the "privilege" of having your monitor go up or down will set you back an extra $400.
Or if you buy a standard mount and later you get a standing desk and want say a VESA mount, you got to bring in your monitor to the Apple store.
So you're saying that Apple's crack design team couldn't figure something like this out? You know something that was available with the old iMac?
Who are those designers? Did they poach them from Elon Musk's Cyber Truck division?
