'Severance,' the biggest success on Apple TV+, will be back for a third season

Taking a victory lap the day after the season 2 finale, Apple TV+ has confirmed what everyone already took for granted, that "Severance" will continue for another season.

As night follows day and innie follows outie, the second-season finale of Apple TV+ hit "Severance" has been accompanied by news that the show has been renewed. Given the immense success of the series, the likelihood of a third season is up there with how Apple just may release an iPhone 17 in September.

"The idea of getting to make more 'Severance' with the greatest cast and crew on Earth is more thrilling to me than all the world's finger traps combined," said creator, writer and executive producer Dan Erickson in a statement. "I can't wait to continue spreading woe, frolic, dread and malice with these truly incredible people."

"Making 'Severance' has been one of the most creatively exciting experiences I've ever been a part of," said executive producer and director Ben Stiller. "While I have no memory of this, I'm told making season three will be equally enjoyable, though any recollection of these future events will be forever and irrevocably wiped from my memory as well."

You do now rather need this "Severance"-style separation of your mind if you're not to spoil the series for anyone still catching up. "Oh hey also -- not a huge deal -- but if you see my innie, please don't mention any of this to him," said star and executive producer Adam Scott. "Thanks."

If the first season properly established this world in which an employee's memories of their work and personal lives are surgically split, then the second dove into what happens when you try to undo this. Apple TV+ has not given us one thin clue what the third season could entail.

But you can guarantee that it will continue to live outside of its weekly one-hour episodes on Apple TV+. It's bound to be featured on other shows again, it's bound to pull off more publicity stunts -- and it's surely going to have more in-joke spinoffs like the self-help book, "The You You Are."

And maybe more Apple executives will find themselves getting the "Severance" experience.

I was listening to a radio station. The announcers were talking about movies. One said that they didn’t really go to movies. Right now they were hooked on Severance.

I guess when you get mentioned randomly on air, you have officially become a cultural thing.

I watched the second season finale last night, and while I've called it, "the corporate Twin Peaks", last night I was getting strong "peak X-files" vibes (guy in a suit and a redhead fighting the future? C'mon...), and I mean both references as the highest of compliments. Really excellent television.

But season 2, ep 7 "Chikhai Bardo" is one of the most unique, creative, innovative, incredibly shot, edited, directed, and acted 50 minutes of television ever made, imho. Hopefully it will get the recognition it deserves.

I watched the final two Season 2 episodes tonight. I really enjoy the show a lot, but I thought the producer overdid the darkness with barely visible faces effect. A little bit of dramatic lighting can add a lot of drama and hyper focus, but at some point I start thinking, “Why don’t they just turn on a friggen light?”  If it wasn’t so overused in so many movies and TV shows I’d be more okay with it, but sometimes it’s too much.

They certainly left us with a cliffhanger.

Well having watched 2 seasons, I still have no idea what's going on.

I’d rather mire in a positive vision of future, than a negative one.

Stemming from the question “can you achieve work-life balance through compartmentalization?,” Severance delivers a parody comedy, a mystery, a sci-fi thriller, and a surrealist mind bender. There are multiple romances. There is a commentary on the dehumanizing infantilism of corporate office work, as well as mind controlling cults. There are romances. The cinematography is brilliant. The soundtrack is brilliant. There are goats and goat herders.

100%. In a season of spectacular filmmaking, that episode stands out. Super impressed with the finale, too.

For hardcore fans, the podcast is such a treat. For the S2E7 of the pod, they feature cinematographer Jessica Lee Gagné, who directed that episode. She is certainly a talent to keep an eye on.

I’m a big X-phile (got the t-shirt!) but I didn’t get an X-files vibe at all. Because he has a suit in the office and she has red hair…pretty loose connection

Yeah it is completely brilliant. S2 was def weirder, and relied even more on exposition rather than physical actions (until finale, similar to S1), but still good.
