AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 receive new firmware update

A new firmware update for the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 4 has been released, though there are currently no details about its contents.

Apple has released a firmware update for AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 2.



On Monday, following the public release of iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4, Apple issued a firmware update for select AirPods models. The firmware update increases the build number to 7E93, up from the previous 7B20 and 7B21, released in October 2024.

The 7E93 firmware update is available only for AirPods Pro 2, and all models of the AirPods 4, including the variant with Active Noise Cancellation. It will not be released for AirPods Max or other non-H2 devices.

With the firmware version 7B19, Apple introduced Hearing Health features to the AirPods Pro 2, which let users perform hearing tests or use the device as a hearing aid in cases of mild to moderate hearing loss.

While the exact contents of Monday's firmware update are unclear, the software likely includes various bug fixes and quality-of-life improvements rather than new features. Apple has not provided any release notes for this version.

Monday's new firmware update is installed automatically for users when the AirPods are plugged into their charging case and connected to an iOS device. There is no manual installation method for this firmware update.

How to check your AirPods firmware version



AirPods users can check the current firmware for their audio accessories by accessing the Settings app on their iPhone or iPad.


  • Open the Settings App

  • Select General

  • Select About

  • Select the AirPods you wish to view


A menu will appear showing relevant device information.

    Apple has indeed finally revealed how to force an update to AirPods.

    I connected my AirPods 4 to my MBA via cable and they were updated in less than two minutes, probably less. I've done this since it was first mentioned at AI many years ago. It's worked very quickly every time, but this is by far the quickest I've seen any of my AirPods get updated.

    As always I have no idea if the updated firmware is a welcome update.
