All-screen iPhone without notch won't come until 2030

While Apple will make steady progress toward moving all Face ID and camera sensors invisibly beneath the iPhone screen, the latest rumors say that you'll have to wait for the iPhone 22 for an all-screen model.

Rumors of an uninterrupted all-screen display for iPhone have existed ever since Apple first introduced the iPhone X with a notch in 2017. It's variously been reported for 2023, and more recently display analyst Ross Young has pushed estimates back to 2026.

Now Young has issued a revised prediction for the all-display iPhone. As well as setting new dates, he says that Apple will work toward an uninterrupted screen in three distinct steps in 2026, 2028, and finally 2030.

Probably 3 stages:
2026 - smaller notch as some under panel Face ID elements remain in the notch rather than transparent under the panel.

2028 - all under panel Face ID elements except the selfie camera are hidden under the panel without a notch. Selfie camera remains separate

-- Ross Young (@DSCCRoss)

While 2030, and so the iPhone 22 Pro, is claimed to be the first time a full-screen model will be ready, the first two steps are said to still be significant.

In 2026 with the iPhone 18 Pro, says Young, Apple will keep some of its Face ID elements in a notch. In 2028, everything to do with Face ID will be hidden under the display.

There will still be a small notch, or possibly a punch-hole type section of the screen, specifically for the front selfie camera.

This report of the move under-display taking place in several steps and over several years, broadly fits with a recent leak from "Digital Chat Station." In that case, though, the claim was that even the front camera would be beneath the display by 2027.

However, that same leaker claimed around ten days before that the expected iPhone fold will come in a version where its inside, folding-out screen would have "under-screen camera technology."

Then shortly before that, "Digital Chat Station" also posted that the front-facing camera on the iPhone 18 Pro will have an under-display Face ID system. And while it has previously reported different dates, The Elec has most recently described the all-screen iPhone won't arrive until "after 2026."

If Young is correct, this means that Apple will not be able to provide an all-display model for the twentieth anniversary of the iPhone.

Note that Ross Young concentrates on display reports, and has a strong track record for accuracy. Prior to this report about the all-screen model, Young's most recent claim is that the iPhone 17 screen will be larger than the iPhone 16's one.

Ah, the year 2030. The turn of the decade is rumored to bring big changes to the tech industry. 6G connectivity, the inevitable switch from silicon chips due to size constraints, more widespread adoption of “smart glasses”, and foldable/rollable devices will be available and more common. And full screen (maybe even wrap around) smartphones.

Don’t see a punch hole. Just looks so basic and already done. Apple loves the pill shape.

I can see total notch delete, but with the pill cutout for the ear speaker still in its current location, with miniaturized Face ID elements in that same tiny enclosure, aided by ai.

To offset the tiny bit of pixel loss, Apple may allow the screen to blend slightly into the side corners of the device to provide some bite to an “all screen” marketing hook

this will also allow a justifiable origin point for a new Dynamic Island.

Even if it’s a punch hole, we won’t see it like that, the shape of the cutout will be obscured by the Dynamic Island
