M5 OLED iPad Pro fall release more certain, screen production underway

The fall update adding the M5 chip to the iPad Pro is getting closer to reality, with OLED displays for the tablet reportedly entering mass production for a launch in October.

Apple's fall updates tend to include some form of iPad change. One of the rumored launches is the upgrade bringing M5 to the iPad Pro, and a report seems to indicate it is on the way.

According to report sources of ZDNet Korea via DigiTimes, mass production of the OLED display used by the iPad Pro has commenced.

The timing for display mass production lines up with the typical expectations for Apple's iPad supply chain ahead of a launch. An early-summer production of OLED panels may seem late, but if it's using the same display technology as the current-gen screens with no major changes, this wouldn't require as much preparation as introducing a whole new display design.

An October introduction of the iPad Pro is probable, considering the usual structure of Apple's fall launches. While a September event is focused on the iPhone with other products as supplementary, the iPad can often be introduced at the same time, or at a follow-up event the following month.

The M4 iPad Pro launch was a considerable oddity for Apple, as its May 2024 launch was the first time that the iPad Pro was the first product in a new Apple Silicon generation. It arrived months before the first M4 Macs.

The rollout would also meet expectations from analysts and rumors on the tablet. In December 2024, Ming-Chi Kuo forecast that the M5 iPad Pro will enter mass production in the second half of 2025.

In March, a serial leaker said that the M5 iPad Pro was in "advanced testing" ahead of mass production.

The M5 iPad Pro is anticipated to be a spec-bump update with relatively few changes, aside from the processor.

While ZDNet is a well-known publication, ZDNet Korea is less so for Western audiences. It also doesn't have much of a track record that we can use to say whether the story is accurate.

DigiTimes, meanwhile, has a reasonable track record when it comes to supply chain rumors and leaks, though its product feature claims are considerably less accurate.

That all said, the presence of other rumors for a fall launch timeline from more accurate sources, as well as Apple's usual schedule of events, makes this a fairly believable story.

Diversification

Supply duties for the OLED panels will apparently be shaken up for 2025's launch. For the current generation, Apple relies on Samsung to supply 11-inch iPad Pro displays and LG for its 13-inch panels.

However, the inbound displays will be supplied from both manufacturers in both sizes, with each dealing with 11-inch and 13-inch OLED panels. The move is probably one of diversification, in that it minimizes supply issues for a specific model if Samsung or LG run into trouble.

This is a big theme for Apple in recent years, and goes beyond the supply chain for individual products. Apple has worked with supply chain partners to expand its presence out of China and into other territories, including India.

Rumor Score: Likely

There will definitely be comments as to who even maxes out an M4 iPad Pro. But to those who do make full use of an iPad Pro, it sounds like this fall is going to be great time to buy a new one.

Writing on an iPad Pro M4 (12.9”)

Not sure exactly what the need would be for the M5 unless the changes to iPad OS require something the current setup lacks.
The iPad Pro is a great device and for many is easily a MacBook Pro replacement.

To me, this is a strange rumor. I would think the M5 iPad Pro is using the exact same display as the M4 iPad Pro. These displays are already being mass produced in the millions of units per year.

So, what information is being used to say that the M5 iPP OLED displays have entered mass production? They are already in mass production. So, the data is an increase mass production? More companies being awarded iPP tandem OLED contracts?

Also, a component can be ready, but the product may not be, as some other part could delay it. Really hoping these M5 iPP do ship in the fall.

Sounds like it will be the Ultimate Computer. Hopefully it doesn't start drawing more power than expected.

More powerful and more efficient Apple is getting closer to having parity with some of the better Nvidia discrete GPU cards without using 300 to 600 watts of power, by the time they get to M6 or M7 I think Apple will be ahead In just about every metric, when it comes to Tablet, Laptop and Desktop computers The biggest question is whether or not they’re going to use it for in house Apple servers, not bad for a company can’t innovate.

    https://opendata.blender.org/benchmarks/query/?compute_type=OPTIX&compute_type=CUDA&compute_type=HIP&compute_type=METAL&compute_type=ONEAPI&group_by=device_name&blender_version=4.3.0

Apple currently is in 12th position with M3 ultra the M5 ultra will probably move into the top 5 the M6 and M7 will be at the top or near depending upon what Nvidia does and their uplift, their trajectory has not been as good as what Apple has been doing with their processor design team. (what will makes the M series stand out is the performance, combining with the ridiculous power efficiency.

I would like to see Apple expand the use of Tandem OLED to MacBook Pro this year. macOS 26 is designed for it. Dell launched laptops with this tech in 2024. It can be done.

yes please! I have an M1 Pro that's really been a joy to use but the 8gb of memory doesn't go as far as it used to. I've noticed apps and safari tabs  ejecting when backgrounded more often lately (perhaps due to Apple Intelligence taking up some of it?). It's probably time for iPads to follow the lead of Macs and be 16gb across the board.

That's actually rumored for Fall 2026 along with the rumored Macbook Pro redesign to a thinner / lighter chassis.

It's not need at this point, just want. I want an M5 iPad but my 2020 iPP is working just fine for what I need it for. Plus, I'm sure this new iPad Pro will come out alongside the new M5 MacBook Pros, so why not upgrade them all at the same time?

Indeed... and that design will be more repairable with batteries that can be replaced by users (at least in the EU). MBP M6 will combine new design, OLED, 2nm, and repairability.... that is a lot for one release

If two vendors are producing both sizes OLED panels then they better look identical.  Reminds me of years ago when Dell had a couple vendors LCD panels in a particular model laptop and one looked great and the other didn't.
