Apple TV+ tends to do very well at getting nominations for awards, and for the 77th Emmy Awards, that trend continues. For the 2025 edition of the accolades, a lot of the nominations stem from its biggest hit, "Severance."

"Severance" secured a total of 27 nominations, including nods for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series, Adam Scott for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and Britt Lower for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

In joint third in the nominations rankings is "The Studio," alongside "The White Lotus" with 23 nominations. Seth Rogen is listed as eligible for three awards, including Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.

While there are some categories where a show gets multiple nominations, "The Studio" almost manages to completely hog one by itself. Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series has nominations for Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Scorsese appearing in the show, with the exception bing Jon Bernthal in "The Bear" for FX.

Other shows that managed to get multiple nominations include "Shrinking" (7), "Slow Horses" (5), "Presumed Innocent" (4), "Pachinko" (2), "The Gorge" (2), "Disclaimed" (2), and "Deaf President Now!" (2).

The 77th Emmy Awards will air on CBS on Sunday, September 14 at 8 pm Eastern. It will also be available to stream on Paramount+.

Context is everything. Apple TV+ will only be 6 years old as of November, and it launched from literally nothing: no prior experience in the television or movie business, no library of its own content to lean on, etc, and no identity as a "brand" of television. No one knows for sure how many subscribers it has, but estimates seem to coalesce at around 45 million. And you know what? That puts Apple+ about 10% ahead of Peacock, the streaming service of NBC/Universal, which is backed by NBC, a slew of cable channels including the very popular Bravo and, oh yeah, a little studio called Universal.

Honestly--and I say this from the perspective of someone who has been in the television business for decades--what Apple TV+ has accomplished from a standing start in just 5.5 years is nothing short of ASTONISHING. A Best Picture Oscar and a boatload of Emmys in major categories for a company that had never been in the TV or movie business before? That kind of defines "impossible." Sure, Netflix is almost at 300 million subscribers, but they've been at the streaming game since 2007 -- their huge success hardly happened overnight. Apple just needs to keep doing what it's doing (which isn't easy!)--making hit, buzzy shows that get a lot of press and critical praise, and its subscriber numbers will continue to grow.

Not sure how to respond as you are both reading my comment as a criticism and inferring things I’m not saying.

What I’m saying is Apple has gotten to the point where they are consistently putting out great content. When it launched the content was good but not always great. Of course this view is subjective.

My second point is that Apple has yet to turn their ability to consistently put out great content into growth. This is just objectively true. Apple can wax poetically about not being worried about sales and just focusing on quality and that is great marketing but they are a publicly traded company and their goal is to maximize shareholder value. They care about sales.

None of what I am saying is negated by your comment. I think Apple TV+ will become a big player but they have yet to crack that code. That said, consistent great content is a step in doing that.

I sincerely hope Jessica Lee Gagné (director, cinematography), Dan Erickson, and Mark Friedman (writers) get acknowledged for S2 Ep7 "Chikhai Bardo". Easily the most stunning hour of television I've watched in years.

edit: I see Keith Fraase received a well-deserved editing nom.
