Look In Awe...the Internet Exists!

I was buying airline tickets for my mom last night and well sit back and look at the internet. Such a vast ocean of knowledge and a daily tool for millions. Just sit back stop thinking of the internet as a daily thing and look at the wonder of it and how amazing a feat it was to get it created and going.

It is kind of weird to think about it starting as three computers on the west coast in 3 universities that sent a packet of information (ping) from one to the other.. Guess we have come a long way from those days.. To think the internet would be no where near where it is today with out the help of capitalism.

Those companies that got in early really hit it off big, IE amazon

I would like to point out that pornography played a sizeable role in popularizing the Internet. Keep that in mind next time you are looking up airline fares!

and who can really honestly say they don't like pornography?

Yes, I can totally testify to this!

Back in the day, (about 5-7 years ago) Our company took our Amateur Line to the net. With precise marketing from a DB that we aquired of people who would rather purchase Adult Natured material from the comfort and PRIVACY of their own homes, stating that they would purchase materials online, ... well ... it was literally "GOLD" for us.

Within one week of the store bring opened, we sold more than DOUBLE what we did with printed catalog material, not just in quarterly sales, but within the time frame of our whole existence. So, not only did our talent make more money from contract sales, we were able to shift more money into R&D for our customers to get their Adult Material in a more expediant manor via online purchases.

And, yes, I do agree to a certain extent, everybody does like to look at a naked woman or man every once in a while.

Heck, I remember when I first discovered the Internet: back at university in 1991, playing with the wonders of Mail and Usenet News on lovely VT100 terminals running all sorts of interesting .login files in squinty orange text (unless you got lucky and got one of the slightly newer ones in green). My first-ever Usenet News post is still archived on groups.google.com...

The holy grail was securing an FTP account for purposes of "research" (largely into naked female anatomy, from most of the users I saw). IRC wasn't available to us for bandwidth reasons.

No WWW, no HoTMaiL, no forums, no eBay and definitely no online ticket ordering.

Of course, now I sit here with an always-on broadband connection, as many toys as I want to run at any given time and able to do all manner of stuff that just wasn't conceivable 12 years ago.

Yes, the Net is truly a wondrous thing. Not perfect, by any stretch, but pretty damn cool.

Do you realize that kids born in the last ten years or so wont even realize there was a world without an internet ! Some of them might even be posting to AI !

I`m only 18 but I have been using computers sence 5 years of age - ah my good ol amiga.

But I remember when my family was first buying into the internet maybe 1995? I still remember this one discussion with my parents and a neighbor, I was only 11, and it went something like this:

"Yeah I heard that typing in caps is symbolic to yelling and you can get into trouble for it"

I dunno thinking about the internet makes me feel old

I'm 19, and got on the internet at about AOL 2.7. However I do remember using 'the internet' before that on the LAUSD test network.

Oh lord. Um...

1986, a Cyber mainframe at the University of Washington, sending mail to a friend at Washington State University.

VT100 terminal (Heath Z19, I believe).

No GUI.

No mouse.

No WWW, no graphical email.

But we did have IM

(The 'talk' command... 'mtalk' let you talk to multiple people simultaneously.)

The utter coolness of it hit me one night a couple years later when I was chatting (via talk) with a guy and asked him how he liked winter... (it was Feb). He said "What are you talking about? It's summer! I love it!" He was in Australia.

It suddenly hit me that I was talking to someone in real-time, at the far opposite end of our entire human sphere of influence... and it was effortless.
