That seems to be about the size of it. FWIW I don't think anyone is interested in 4U rack mounts because they offer no advantages over current G4 towers (ie they take up just as much space).
The only real option is a 1/2U rack mount with a single PCI or AGP card.
I have my doubts as to whether Apple has a market for a G4 mother board with just a single slot - and it doesn't seem logical to ship a "standard" board with five slots (1 AGP + 4 PCI) if four of those are not accessible.
[quote]Jobs also said that on May 14 Apple will introduce a rack-mounted server, the first dedicated server Apple has introduced in a long time. Jobs did not provide specifications or details. <hr></blockquote>
OK, it's not a direct quote of SJ, but I think that we can believe news.com on this one.
I'm still looking for "rack mounts" said Jobs! EWeek says:
*******
Excluding a glimpse at a brushed-metal faceplate resembling the Titanium PowerBook, Jobs declined to provide additional details about the "major release" of a dedicated, rack-mounted server until its unveiling May 14. Nevertheless, he did specify a few features of the new server OS that will accompany it. Besides LDAP, NetBoot and NetInstall support, the server will be able to run headless. It will also feature a server-optimized Java Virtual Machine; disk, print and mail quotas; and support for Python, Fast CGI, YCC and Ruby.
General question (not for this rackmount release specificly): would it be possible to make a firewire (gigawire?) based PCI breakout box, so those people who don't need any slots don't get any (ie servers), and those who do need 'em simply get an additional rackmount box (ie video editors)?
He also said the company will announce a rack server next week.
"On May 14th, we are introducing our first dedicated server in a long time," Jobs said. "It's a rack-mount server, but I can't you give you many details." Jobs would not release any technical specifications for the server, saying users will need to wait until next week."
If Apple wants to make a serious server, it needs to give it seriouis power.
I don't think two 1.2 GHz G4s can cut it.
Apple can make a wonderful machine otherwise, wih enough memory (8 gigs enough?) and enough storage (a RAID with, say, 320 gigs), and fast enough support circuitry. But MOTOROLA IS STILL LAGGING BEHIND!

I think it's been done, I'm not sure what the real world results are...
If servers are released with new mobos next week, then how many people are going to buy Powermacs?
I think we may see new powermacs next week along with the servers, or if not next week, very soon. Otherwise nobody is going to buy the towers. Especially if the servers have faster G4s, but still even if they just have DDR RAM people are going to wait until the Powermacs do.
For all the time we've waited, that new mobo is pretty damn LAME. All it has is a 133 MHz bus, 133 MHz DDR RAM (266 MHz effective), and nothing else to write home about. That sucks. Pair it with the same old G4s, maybe bumped up to 1.2 GHz, and what you have are the same overpriced, undervalued, totally lame powermacs that lag behind Pentium boxes at everything but a few photoshop filters.
Totally pathetic. Apple better find a G5 somewhere soon, otherwise their market share is going to slip, slip, slip away!

you do realize that these servers ain't gonna be cheap, right
Comments
maybe Apple is just going to slap a silver Apple logo on these.....

The only mention I've seen is on MacCentral, and that's not a quote from Jobs but appears to be speculation by MacCentral.

edit: news.com has "rackmount" in t's coverage:

Apple's going to need racks packed with G4s to entice people to switch.
BTW: Is there a picture of this faceplate anywhere?

These seem to variously rely on the connection of another PCI slot or a CardBus (PCMCIA) slot.

they are likely going to be CONSIDERABLY more money than powermac
