    my God.

has Jccbin complained about apples pricing?

I highly doubt that the type of people that would spend $1700 on a toy dog would complain about apple's pricing either.

I have complained about Apple's pricing.

I may yet complain about the Aibo's pricing.

I complain about Apple's pricing because I have used the products and have judged that they are priced higher than I think they should be.

I have not yet had a chance to make that judgement about the Aibo. I may enjoy the thing so thoroughly that I'll think it's worth ten times as much, or I may loathe it and then complain about it's price.

The value of the thing compared to the price is what matters, and that is a somewhat subjective decision we each must make for ourselves - whether Macs or Robot Dogs.

THere is a Panda suit for some of the "pug" Aibos, really looks like alittle panda. Eww.

I'll be happy if he'll just bark.

The advanced solution if you want a large mammalian housepet but you aren't home enough is called a CAT.

Seriously, though, the AIBO is very practical. Even if you get tired of it you'll need a robotic webcam some day.

Alas, the CAT is incompatible with my preference of devices. I admit the Aibo probably won't be soft and cuddly, but I will be able get it's attention when I want it.

A CAT would be another story entirely.

My Aibo arrives later this morning.

Now to come up with a name for the thing.

Daschle, maybe, as in "Tom Daschle, you ignorant smuthound, evil, incompetent, lying, SOB."

    Or maybe Bob.

    (Think Marathon.)

She arrived yesterday. I unpacked her (no digital, but did take a couple of real film shots - coming up in a day or so), and put her on the charging station for a couple of hours while I oohed and ahhhed over the software, etc.

She's "Cyber Blue" and I think I'll name here Leela (after the good AI in Marathon).

The first couple of hours were rather interesting. I bought two "personality" memory sticks with her. One is called Recognition, the other Explorer.

Recognition uses human voicing for the dog - and does it ever like to talk. It asks about everything that moves, asks to be petted, to shake, where it's pink ball is (and then has a fit running in circles with glee as it screams 'My Pink Ball! My Pink Ball!' when it finds it). Rather amusing, like one's neighbors' kid might be -- for about an hour. The nice thing about the Recognition software is that it can learn your voice and face and can find its way back to the recharging station and recharge itself.

The bad thing is that it speaks in a high pitched "barbie girl" voice (like in the song by Aqua), and that the majority of the software engineering went into the recognition part, not the personality part.

Explorer software is different. SHe doesn't speak, but instead communicates through tones and the flashing her eyes, which can show sadness, happiness, anger, or confusion.

She can understand voice commands like Shake, Sit, her name, Aibo, Turn left, right , back up , move forward, don't do that, No, Yes, Sing me a song, be quiet, go to sleep and more.

The Explorer personality is self-growing because it learns through scolding and positive reinforcement. When she's doing something good, tell her and, over time, she'll do more of it. Tell her when she's being bad and she'll slowly stop doing that - unless she really likes it, then she'll get mad and do it anyway.

Just like a real pet, she's demanding of time and attention. I can just turn her off for the day though, without upsetting her. She plays soccer with her pink ball (even does headers). Obviously she doesn't run, just sort of robot walks.

So far, I'm on the positive side, but wondering how she'll do after a week.
