I'm sorry, but the whole reason the iPod has Firewire is so that you can quickly move music in and out of your iPod. If you wanted to keep every one of your 2000 CDs on your iPod, you could do with USB - while it would take a long time to download, you'd only have to do it once.

I think the idea is that you keep your WHOLE collection on your home machine, then download "1000 songs" at a time to your iPod.

I think it's kinda silly to complain about the quality of MP3 in the same thread as complaining that the capacity should get bigger. If you can't listen to MP3 quality music but want a portable solution, then rig a battery and a 200 CD car changer and amp to a backpack and enjoy! You could even call it the iPack (though Compaq might want a word with you) <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

while this IS a selling point... it is kind of a pain in the ass to do... yeah, waiting 20 min as oppose to 4 hours is A LOT better, but it is by no means "really fast" i mean i ahve many times done this, but it was a last minute idea and I was waiting for the transfer to finish--it was annyoing--if it was an instantaneous switch then it would be a different story... but that is not going to happen any time soon... as long as it takes more then 5 min to get every song on and off the iPod it will not be something that should be considered a way to "download 1000 songs at a time"... also, the idea is that you dont know which song you may be in the mood to listen to, but you want the option to ahve all of them all of the time...

ditto, one or the other... quality or quantity.. or in the iPod's case a good compromise between the 2... (size and weight are also pluses )

I find it quite humorous that so many people are concerned about quality of MP3 files. I would have to conclude that all of these people either own XM radios or find listening to an AM/FM broadcast radio as an absurd form of noise. Since the equivalent quality of an average AM/FM radio is about 28K, maybe 32K if you spent alot of money. I have one 40GB and one 60GB drive for my portable NEO and I rip at 96K. I also have about 200GB ripped at CD quality hooked to my Apple IIsi( It makes a nice Jukebox ).

Now if the iPod had optical audio out I would buy one in a minute, but until that day comes there is no way to listen to high quality MP3 files anyway.

    Keep on Rip'n

No one suggested using USB. Maybe USB 2. I have the feeling that the next iPod will be FW 2 anyway.

And, yes - I will complain about both. If one is fixed, then both problems are solved.

Listening to "new": styles of music that incorporate lots and lots of sounds - heavy metal, punk, some types of rock, and some kinds of rap - this is all fine in MP3. There's too much noise for the human ear to distinguish an actual error in encoding or a flaw in the recording.

If I wereto rip my Bach collection to CD, I would never be able to listen to it. Basses are incomplete without the full frequency range available ALL the time, brass is tinny, and even the piano lacks the warmth that a CD can have. A CD is no substitute for an actual performance, but it's very good to have one in your car. There's just not enough information encoded on a CD for classical music to be worthwhile listening to.

If I'm to pay $500 just for the iPod, never mind $500 for an old iMac, I'm going to expect it to give me absolutely excellent quality.

$500 gets a good deal of live music, if you go to a theatre supported by some wealthy patron.

Until the iPod has a larger HD for CD-quality files, I wont buy it. A 20 GB one would get me to buy it - I'd fit maybe 32 full CDs on it.

I'm sorry, MrBillData, what exaclty are you talking about? When you say sample rate, do you mean bitrate? Why would you rip from a CD a 92 Khz, when they are only sampled at 44.1? Bitrate vs sample rate... Big difference.

A new iPod is coming, I'm sure.

    Will it be a 20GB?

Will it have a remote control?

Will it have a line-in (I doubt that)?

Will it come with a leather case and swivel kit?

One thing is certain: right now, you can find 10GB iPods at 430$. That's a sign!
