True.. but maybe he'll say "We're going to use HyperTransport, now let's take a look at what we're going to put this great technology into... as we all know, up til now, time travel has been relegated to the realms of science fiction.. today we are changing all of that..."

    MSKR</strong><hr></blockquote>

Sweet...! They'd just install a "Doorway" between Pixar? and Apple? for Steve to go back-and-forth. Then they could sell his jet. Maybe even install ANOTHER door to a GAP store so he can stock-up on black turtlenecks and jeans.

Off-Topic: You think if GAP offered the "Jobs" line of jeans and turtlenecks... Apple-enthusiasts would bite the hook and go for it...? heheh...

EDIT: "Duh!" I was thinking Teleportation... not time-travel. Must have been a NeXT product...

[quote]OK now why would Steve, aside from being an all around nice guy, tell us "I'm making the PowerMac you can buy today Really Stinking Obsolete? in a month? Doesn't he want to sell machines for the next month?<hr></blockquote>

No idea what the announcement could be, but a month's time before Macworld shouldn't rule out something with major implications for new Power Macs. Yes, the writing would be on the wall then - but that's not a catastrophe. Apple can't realistically expect to maintain sales of the current models right up until the last minute. In fact, it would probably be happy to let inventories run dry in the weeks beforehand.

Of course if Steve were going to announce somehting like HT which would make the PMs feel completely outdated, maybe he would also be rolling out steep ($500?) price cuts. Let's say he announced that July 4th you could go to the Apple site and build a new PM with HT and oh yeah, dual 1.4GHz is the max. Until then we are dropping the price on ALL PowerMacs by $500. This would make the 800 MHz PM $1099. SUre he'd probly take a bite out of iMac sales for a month, but their PM stock would definitely get reduced in a hurry. How many folks would feel it was completely worth the discount to get a current PM rather than wait till they would be available?

Why would he announce something like that before the machines were actually ready? The only time anything like that has been done in the past is to let developers know about stuff they need to support, and that is always under NDA. No, this won't be the announcement of future hardware unless it is ready to ship.

Other possibilities are strategic alliances, price reductions/increases, announcing a new CEO, squelching all the G5 rumours, or introducing some new product. Key interviews might be a sensible way to intro a very targetted product -- something for a particular vertical market. Bring in key press members who are interested and involved in the target market, and give them the whole song and dance in a personal fashion. That turns them into evangelists for Apple.

The biggest complaint I've heard from the institutional buyers I've been associated with (and for a small time, was), is that the release schedule and secrecy really screws up their buying process. The budget doesn't plan for two trade shows, etc. It's incredibly annoying trying do decide how to space upgrades around a company's theatrics. So this could be their way of saying: "Sorry, we'll let you know what our future holds now."

There's a thin line between forward looking company statements and what consumers should expect in the future. The SEC looks dimly at companies trying to boost their stock value with statements of how good they're going to be in the future.

Since their processors (computers) are based on MOTO, they can't really say were going to be a lot faster in the future because the reality is MOTO could get out of the Apple PPC business any time they want. (well essentially they are now with regards to updates)

With regards to software, Apple has control of this. Forward looking statements could be made.

Would this announcement be the reason the WWDC was under NDA?

I go along with the QT 6 suggestion, plus a video conferencing device or software. OS X 10.2 will be later, at or after MWNY. HT would likely be introduced in connection with new products that use it. Maybe at MWNY. Just an opinion.

As far as forward looking announcements go, the guy who gave the most eloquent complaint to me said: "When the Dell rep comes out, he shows us their roadmap and what they're going to release next month, in six months, a year, even two years in the future. You can buy your systems with the upgrade milestones already planned."

Imagine if you'd bought Beige G3s and said "We'll upgrade in four years when the G5 is available."

I'm leaning towards QT 6 now. Also, it would be a great time for our fruit company to release their MPEG-4 video component of iChat. It would be an appropriate announcement, though some of you would disagree with that completely.

This is silly. Apple was one of the founding members of the HyperTransport consortium along with AMD and Nvidia. Reading between the lines that means they have already announced the use of hypertransport in future products.

    <a href="http://www.api-networks.com/pressreleases/pr072401a.shtml"; target="_blank">http://www.api-networks.com/pressreleases/pr072401a.shtml</a>; :

[quote] \t"Apple is delighted to participate as one of the leaders in the HyperTransport Technology Consortium," said Jon Rubinstein, Apple?s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. "HyperTransport represents a great technology with exciting future potential."<hr></blockquote>

Any HT news out of Apple will the release of an HT-based powermac, which isn't going to happen anytime soon if you look at what was offered in the Xserve.

[quote]HyperTransport: Come visit the HyperTransport Consortium June 4th (Tuesday) through 6th.

    <hr></blockquote>

The complete quote from their site is "Come visit the HyperTransport Consortium June 4th through 6th at SuperComm."

SuperComm being a industry tradeshow for the communications industry in Atlanta, GA during that time frame. A tradeshow that Apple is not even attending. I think you are reading tea leaves that aren't there
