Back in my day (OMG, I've never said that before...I'm officially an old fart!), the only notebook required for school was one that had a little metal spiral binder along the side of it.
Heh heh, you and me both!
Last month I was asked to assess the web/flash design work of some students from a local college. I was blown away by the fact that each student I met pulled out a 15" Titanium from their portfolio bag!
Man, I wish I had one back when!
But it appears everyone has a different need/want for why they're waiting. There seems little doubt that the 15 model is hitting the sweet spot, otherwise why all the fuss. It's just an optimum size for so many needs. It's portable enough, but also large enough to do full blown video work without the need of an external monitor.
Plus watching DVD movies on that would be awesome.
My 1Ghz Ti has a really good Airport reception. No problems here at all. In fact, no problems with the Ti what so ever. I have owned about 4 desktops and 3 laptops over the past 15 years. Eventually, in time, they all became obsolete. But listen to this, none of them ever handled like this Ti book. New or old. I can see this baby serving me well for many a year to come. I mean really. Processing power has surely reached the point where things will calm down a bit ont he old upgrade front. I mean, the days of PC 286, 386 was years ago. Especially if we are now moving towards distributed computing on the net, where it doesn matter what processing power you have as long as you have a lot of bandwidth. I dunno, when I hear people saying the Ti is obsolete already, I just think two things. Spoilt. Brat.

I am a very satisfied 1 GHz TiBook owner, best Mac I've ever had, but that doesn't change the fact it's obselete. My AirPort reception sucks, I don't have internal bluetooth, I can only barely play Warcraft III and overall OS responsiveness is still not quite good enough.
Besides the Al cases on the 12" and 17" are so much more robust and more esthetically pleasing. The counterweighted hinge is a marvel, something my TiBook is sorely lacking. I'm buying a new 15" the minute they come out.
And lastly, it's amazing to me how someone who upgrades frequently due to legitimate professional need is somehow a "spoiled brat".
There won't be any new powerbooks before December at the earliest. You quite obviously have a computer now, why not continue to use that one?
If you need a new machine for school I recommend buying a $350 PC to take to school until the new laptops come out. This will hold you over, and get you a PC so you have both for school. No doubt they'll make you use that PC for something anyway.
Computers always get replaced with a better model, but if holding out for the G5 laptop is important to you, then I recommend the cheep pc solution until the G5 laptops are released.

What? Are you on crack? New PowerBooks will be out between now and mid-Sept. Let's get that straight right now. Unless you're Steve Jobs, don't make such a ludacris statement.

I'm with the gang wondering what performance a person realistically needs out of a laptop that Apple can't offer them currently.
The TiBook I'm using now is four to eight times faster (depending on the apps) than the G3 desktop my family has downstairs. Now that I'm using the new Kodak DCS 620 camera (which is performing WONDERFULLY for all those curious -- the speed and flexibility of film without the drawbacks), the G4 especially shines using the Photo Desk software -- this thing batch converted over 170 RAW files to Photoshop TIFF (6 MB files each) in less than 10 minutes.
Yes, yes, yes, the G5 will be incredible for stuff like this, but I encourage people to appreciate the power we have in notebooks right now. It's amazing the G4's in there and not melting now.
Actually I was trying to be helpful. The only thing you've managed to accomplish is to post "Lamest Post Ever."
I'm not Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs is a figurehead, a CEO of a company. Everybody refers to him like he's personally shipping the Powerbooks. The powerbooks are ready to go when somebody else tells the board of directors "Okay, these are ready." Not because Steve walks around and goes "Let's ship them now."
Apple was already quoted as saying No new powerbooks until at least the end of the year, and that the G4 would be continued to be used in powerbooks for some time.
So don't F ucking tell me I wouldn't have any idea. It's public knowledge retard.

Link??? I only remember Joswiak saying the following:
Quote:
The Power Mac G5 is very high power processor and as you can see as this unit spins around, it has a fairly significant cooling system including heat sinks that mean it's probably not going into a PowerBook anytime soon.
The current model 15-inch PowerBook was intro'd on 11/6/02. It's 9 months old. I don't think it has much longer fellas. And, no, it won't be around until December. Sorry inkhead. Not going to happen.
I'm personally sick to death of waiting for the new 15, but am committed to the wait. I've toyed with the idea of getting the 15 1ghz, but want to see the next installment seeing as it's obviously on its way.
I'm sick of my borrowed 366 ibook and it's 1gig of free harddrive space... I need a new powerbook bizatches. A to tha double P, L E step up to the plate!!!
And on a side note, it shizits me no end when apple nerds are all like "ooh, steve wouldn't do blah blah" like steve jobs is their best mate... He's the head of a multinational, not your dad, brother or friend..
So many people have said, oh whats wrong with the current ones, and ibook is all you need blah blah blah. You guys arn't getting the point. The mean reason im getting an Apple is not because im "enamured" but because I love the OS and the design, but that can only acount for so much. If a student is gona dish out five thousand dolars (for us canadians) on a laptop they are going to want it to last them as long as posible. Starting with an almost year old model doesn't help that.
Second of all, I don't want this to be a troll, but I think the current G4 is underpowered, the reason people see the G5 and then want everything to have it is because Apples have had shity processors for more than a year and the g5 is like some kind of silicon messaih. If the next incarnation of the powerbook is not a g5, and it probably wont be, I would like to have the fastest I can get.
I also would like to get the last generation of G4 powerbooks (if i can't get a g5 ). There are lots of issues with the current 15inch, most of all Airport reception and durability, that have been addressed with the aluminum design.
I don't think im the only person who is waiting for a powerbook, and who thinks that the ibook or 12/17 inchers arn't right for them. Don't assume that just because they are a student they want a barebones cheap laptop, especialy on these forums because most students who just want a barebones laptop are probably going with a dell, dude.
Anyone remember Jobs saying this would be "the year of the notebook"? (or was it "portable"?) Seems kinda of dumb of him to say that if he were only referring to the January announcement of the 12" and 17" and then a minor or slightly more than minor update in December. Maybe it's just me but that doesn't seem like enough to justify the phrase "The year of the notebook". I'm leaning September for an update. Anyone?
(hope this hasn't been beat to death and I just missed it b/c I've been away from the forums a while )
I have a question: What are you college students DOING that requires a machine like the TiBook? Since 1995, my Duo 280c (purchased around 1999), Powerbook 3400c (bought around 2000), and then my current 2001 dual USB iBook (bought new in late 2001)--have gotten me through an MA and a Ph.D. I'm being totally sincere about this; I know nothing about the kinds of work that goes on in the sciences, nor do I know what kinds of portable computers such folks need.
So I ask again: could someone explain what you folks are/plan to be doing that REQUIRES something more powerful than an iBook?
I'm asking for a few reasons:
1) I don't understand
2) I worry that some of you may have a distorted sense of what kind of computers you need
3) I worry that this might not be the crisis it seems to be for many people.
This is the primary usage matrix of computers on a college campus, seriously. There may be some that actually boot up mathematica, matlab, final cut, after effects, flash mx, etc., etc., but more than 70% of a typical (male, as I don't want to be unfair) college student's time is spent with the three categories above.
Grad students, yes, they sometimes need the power for practical purposes. But technology moves ahead, and if students get caught up in the wake, then so be it. Everybody does. The equipment gets sold one way or another. This whole discussion about progress has been beaten to death in many a forum; it's just particularly volatile among Mac users (excluding professionals that actually have the disposable income to drop on a new one more than once every three-four years) because we upgrade (honestly) so seldomly.
we are just sitting on the dock of the bay, wasting time
we have no choice yes what's out there is still better than anything wintel can produce because they still have dum ol dos, after working with .mac and web site developmemt the integration of apple's products is truly humbling, it's the way it should be. i just took pictures connected my camera to usb, iphoto started, one button to a new web page and bingo i updated my .mac address
it's the total experience, gang and waiting for the new and next is what we do--we are different it's 1984 al over again remember that commercial shown only once but influenced a generation--we are at that point savor it like a fine wine( not whine). wintel stuff just doen't gather peoples steam are there forums about getting sick????NO WAY.we are waiting for, not the next square box, the rude reflection of a monopoly that caters to mediocrity---we are waiting for the new jaw dropping laptops that redefine the whole experience--
wintel are commodities, apples an attitude and lifestyle, we are the chosen, respect the journey to a higher plane oooommmmm ooooooommmmmm
[B]I have a question: What are you college students DOING that requires a machine like the TiBook?
Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. But, frankly, and again in my opinion (I know other people will disagree), the faster TiBooks are the only good powerbooks at running OS X. If I were a student running 9 apps, then of course I'd get an iBook or an old g3 Powerbook. But if I wanted to run X, and most people do, I'd want to go for the most powerful thing available. Especially if Apple is willing to sell the low-end Ti for reasonable prices.

It's ludicrous to expect that this man (pictured below) would make any statements about Powerbooks.
