the macuser in question is the print edition (8th August 2003 Vol19no.16) subscribers get it a couple of days early.
it states that Apple plan to release a PB G5 as early as January next year, according to high-level industry insiders. It then goes on to discuss feasibility doubts of launching a G5-based portable due to the heat issue. It then goes on to saying that G5 desktops are over engineered to acommodate faster, hotter processors in the future without a redesign. Also could use slower version of the 970 chip. Still expects a September PB G4 speedbump update and 15" model.
Now if Addison had qouted the text for his "rumor" in the first place, then we all could have seen that there is ZERO new here. Hell the author doesn't even say January, he hedges lamely and says maybe July. Wohoo, there's a bold prediction packed with insider info.
People, we don't even have corroboration of the existence of this Macuser rumor, let alone its accuracy. Maybe you should hold off changing your buying plans.
My buying plans are being shaped by the fact that there's no new G4 PB now, not by when we might expect a G5. July came and went without an update and now it's looking like another 5 weeks before an announcement. Apple/Moto's gotten to the point of too little, too late. The back to school season is being missed. Might as well wait 5 months and see what happens at MWSF.

Hmm, I know Ian. I even helped him with a couple of his articles. I heard about the end of June that he'd moved on. He was about as well plugged in as anyone but this bit seems like a large measure of speculation based on a small bit of faint hints. IOW, doesn't mean anything.
We can put the pieces together reasonably well ourselves. Let's say PBs are updated mid-Sept. Count 6 months out and you arrive at March for a probable next revision. It could be one last speedbumped G4 or it could be the .09µ G5. It's anyone's guess. If it'll be just a G4 speedbump, there'll be no mention at MWSF. If the G5 is nearing completion, it could be announced in Jan.
Did I make any sense? I'm not sure because I think I have a kidney stone so I'm, er, medicated.
Gawd! has no one any real information? Has nothing leaked out of infinite loop in all these months? It seems like Jeane Dixon is doing the guesswork. We have not seen the G4 update that was due in March then July now some yahoo puts on his foil hat and says the the G5 will be out in Jan no wait..July. I'm going back to the magic eight ball.
I just bought a 17" G4 PowerBook. Wanna know why? Because I needed a laptop. Think it was foolish? I don't. I sold my old 400 TiBook in December expecting to get a G5 tower or laptop within the next 6 months or so. Didn't happen.
And guess what? When the schedule slips to WWDC or maybe Creative 2004 or Paris Expo, etc, how productive are people going to be when waiting for 6-9 months more? Forget it, when Apple releases a G5 PowerBook, I'll be one of the first in line. But I am not going to ever "hold out" a computer purchase again. It is just a waste of time and productivity.

I agree, I'm about to get 1.42GHz, need one by end of August and can't wait for the G5, guess I'll get the second generation G5 when they are 3GHz Quads with 3 pci/3 pcix slots, 16 GB of ram and hold two opticals and six 250 GB SATA drives
Aside from the rumor itself, the main issue for most of us is to whether invest in a short life cycle product or to wait. As I assume most of you prospective buyers, you'll be using it for business or for school. As my accountant says, buy at least one computer a year for a tax deduction. And take a class and donate clothes.
Anyway, it's important to remember you can write off the computer purchase so it's not that wasted. A computer a year helps get your hard earned money back from Uncle Sam in one way, shape or form. Why not let that form be in the shape of an Apple.
