Windows Problem

I have (in addition to my Macs) a Windows machine which does not receive too much use. Accordingly, I haven't had too many problems. However, recently an issue has manifested itself.

Upon startup, the monitor displays a black screen with white letters (looking exactly like DOS) which read:

Windows could not start up because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<WINDOWS ROOT>\\SYSTEM 32\\HAL.DLL.

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I am running Windows XP Home.

Can anyone help? I'll be eternally grateful.

I think there is a key or two you hold down upon startup. I think it might be F11 or something like that. Of course, your first problem is that you're running Windows .

I couldn't agree with you more.

I attempted to use the Recovery CD, however, Windows XP no no longer detects the HD.
