Design The Next Apple Handheld!!
Which among you are the best and brightest of AI's posters? Which of you are up to my challenge?
From this day hence, until the eve of MacWorld New York, I issue forth the
DREWPROPS HANDHELD CHALLENGE
Create a convincing photograph, document, plans, video or similar mockup that appears to show the Apple OS running on some new, slick piece of hardware. Old videos and images from the Applele Collection are not valid. Convince us why YOUR submission is the best direction for this prototypical new hardware to go!
The winner will be awarded the adulation and unmitigated awe of his or her AI peers...for what that's worth.
Be ye challenged, and may fortune smile upon your efforts!

Are you posting this because you can't do it yourself or you can't debunk someone elses work.... or could it be a little of both <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
And yes, playing critic is fun, but if I had the time I could probably make something myself (a still image mind you). But video would be cooler. Wouldn't it be funny if one of our folks out-fakes the efforts of Spy-Mac? From what I've seen it's not all that difficult!

If inkwell got you thinking about it, get ready for powerbooks/iBooks with trackpads that have graphic tablet like features, and ADC and iMacs with touch sensitive screens by January 2003.
I give you the "STONE"
<a href="http://homepage.mac.com/ray27/stone_tool/" target="_blank">http://homepage.mac.com/ray27/stone_tool/</a>
OK these are rough sketches but picture a river stone that fits comfortable in your hand. about an inch deep (maybe a little less. the battery on the bottom helps it sit in your hand.
It has a camera, a software phone, a 1.8" HD (ala the iPod, software componets for airport access, and blue tooth, via the same antenna, a touch screen color LCD, but main navigation is by the thumb switch a 2 or 4 way rocker swithch and the index finger "action" button.
The thumb swith in not a pointer, it navigates from menu to menu or icon to icon. All services are accessable in three clicks or less making for rapid navigation.
Like the first STONE TOOL it is multi function, easy to use, portable and simple.
enjoy.

So I through together a sketch and interface in about 30 min. (including posting and scaning)
Glad you could get a laugh out of it.
But i am sorry you missed the irony of the design.

Oooh, and have the batteries shaped like berries! This is gonna rock!
It was a week ago last tuesday, about 10:32 am. I had just finished eating breakfast, and was unfolding my PowerBook ready to read a daily dose of AppleInsider, when there was a knock on the door. Upon opening it, I saw a group of Apple workers, all dressed in black, wearing mirrored sunglasses, and with aqua Xs on their shirts. The leader held out a package in his hands.
He handed it me without saying a word. I took hold of it, and was about to ask a question, when a black van with the NeXT logo on it came careering down the road outside. The guys glanced over their shoulder, and instantly ran off in the opposite direction. I caught a glimpse of the familiar Newton logo on the back of their shirts.
Bringing the box inside, I unwrapped it slowly, bringing out a handful of circuit boards, a lot of schematic diagrams, and one seemingly finished device. With trembling hands, I pressed the button on the front marked 'pwr'. The screen jumped to life at once, and instantly the MacOS X login screen appeared to my eyes.
The users were in a list, and I saw the names Steve Capps, Larry Tesler, and David Dunham. Tapping on the first, I was confronted with a password dialogue. I scrawled on the screen, randomly guessing passwords and marvelling at the way the handwriting recognition worked at the same time. In the end, I accessed the device with the password "ihatejobs'. Then the standard MacOS X desktop appeared, with a menubar, dock, and finder window.
Will post more after I've had a bit more of a play. There's some kind of diary on here, which I'm about to go and read...

Now THAT is what I am talking about...!
Good use of over-the-top narrative dialog...
Oh yeah, crappy-assed design of the tablet/handheld...!
Cannot wait to hear "The Diary" though...
Cheers!
<img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" /> Maya for Mac OS X <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />
Steve extends his finger and to the crowd?s disbelief... he picks his nose! <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" /> <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />
Steve retracts his finger and says: " It's the worlds first FingerTop Computer (with widescreen).
The crowd goes crazy.
The End
<strong>Jobs as well as many other high Apple execs hate handhelds as well.</strong><hr></blockquote>
Then why did he try to buy Palm? To liquidate its assets and bury remaining inventory in the desert?
But to keep you folks going, I've posted a few more screenshots, so you can get an idea how stunning a design it actually is.
Amorya
<strong>OK, I can't show you the diary just yet. I've not yet figured out how to get this thing to connect to a Mac... there doesn't appear to be a single external port, opening or socket on it! Not even for power or batteries!
</strong><hr></blockquote>
It might be running on a CCF (Compact Cold Fusion) process. Which is pretty cool but CCF is still a new technology and the best prototypes at this stage are unstable. I would suggest 1) Wearing a lead apron when handling the device 2) For God's sake don't drop it (could have the whole "Sum of all Fears" thing going on, of course that wouldn't be your concern at that point) 3) Hold off on having kids for a couple decades

Thanks for the warning. I've only recently thought of the possibility that Steve might have staged the whole thing in an effort to get rid of one of the AppleInsider gang! He'll have traced me from my IP address, and set up the whole incident, even to the point of creating an OSX running handheld, just to throw me off the scent until the thing explodes in my face.
But.... it's OSX on a handheld. I'm gonna keep playing anyway
