I think the reason why Apple never optimized it is not because they can't, it's just because they don't want to create a special case for the applications folder. I mean, the file system is inherently slow for listing large folders, in order to speed up (without relying on the cache) is some type of a hack that stores and maintains a specialized index just for the applications folder. For example, Windoze's start menu->programs is fast, and it's fast because it doesn't actually access the file system to get the list of programs, it just uses some specialized index; although it's actually a different story on Windoze, since programs are scattered all across the hard drive, it wouldn't even be possible to get the list of programs from the file system. But while I appreciate the simplicity/consistency of having applications folder be just like a regular folder, I still wish Apple would optimize it as a special case since it's a folder that the all Mac users accesses all the time.
IME with Panther it seems the dock menus are fast for all folders BUT the application folder. Probably has something to do with the structure of apps on OSX (bundles), because my mp3 folder, which has over 300 items in it (folders and some individual files) appears almost instantly.

GOSH! i just tried, you´re right!! makes you wonder, no..?
i too really hope apple does something about this.
If they're new bugs, have at it. Do you now have 7B68 installed to see if the previous 8 or 10 interface glitches you posted have been fixed as previously reported?

I'll bet the applications folder takes so long because it is a folder of nested folders with many things in it.. if it tries parsing them all, that would be slow.

Finder Related Problems/Bugs
- NEW Filenames in Finder windows leave little artifact lines where the file was.
- NEW Some utility file icons are really messed up! (Activity Monitor, Keychain Access, NetInfo Manager, Remove Script Menu, Install Script Menu, Input Method HotKey) After restart, it was fine.
- NEW With Desktop text set to size 10, alignment is off(too high) and text looks blurry.
- Finder toolbar icon "Connect" represents the old network icon.
Misc. Problems/Bugs
- The widget to hide/show toolbars looks different in normal Aqua windows than Simple Finder View widgets...slightly.
- iCal live-window dragging is very choppy.
Other Findings(Not Bugs)
- Sheets always uncurl in Metal apps(Finder, Safari, Etc..). In Aqua apps(Text Edit, Preview, Etc..) the sheets comes straight down like normal(but with the dynamic drop shadow as they come down). But if a window is too small for the save dialog to come straight down, they uncurl as all Metal app sheets do.
- New intro and music. Music also plays for a while longer into the registration.
- Finder sheets now match other Metal apps and uncurl!
Is the newest Panther build stable enough for every day use for days on end? Running iTunes, Carracho Server and Client, Safari, AIM, Mail, Toast 5.2.1, and the odd other app? I saw the WWDC build and it definitely was not in my experience on the 400mhz iMac with 768 RAM.

Seems to be very stable at last. I haven't seen any of the odd "here and there" bugs I've been experiencing since the WWDC. I'm now using it as my full-time OS. Toast does work (5.2.1 and 6) as does every other major .app (I use most of the Adobe, Macromedia and Office suite apps) and Utilities. I hope that's informative enough for you.
i am still getting the firewire disk icon bug in build 7b53. Is that fixed in the latest builds? [insert firewire disk, disk comes up in finder sidebar window as the last used application folder icon]
I don't know if anyone posted this yet, but a little bird tells me that Backup 2.0 works in 7b68. Backup 1.2.3 was miserably broken in the last build the birdie saw (miserably as in crashed on start AND threw a nice little "youdontgottheframeworksineed.frameworks missing" error. It was quite disturbing.)
Let me just announce that I'm officially in love with Panther. It makes my computer feel new again. It works with all my apps. It fixed the damn printing through a windows machine problem I was having all in about 3 clicks. RAqua works well. And fast. Mail.app is amazing. Expose on my dual monitor set up is something to behold. I can't wait for this thing to hit the stores.

I've just noticed it doesn't display all elements of large folders, oddly. It seems to stop at item 192 or something.
let me know

No, they were not all fixed yet.
Would you like me to post then?
Just the new ones dude, the old ones are still right where you left them, so we already know what those look like.
