I'm visiting my parents, and they just got a new P.C. with XP. Every 5 minutes when your on the net, a "messenger" window pops up with an advertisement to stop the pop-ups. How in the hell do you stop this?!

Get them to buy a Mac, and never use XP again.

If it's Windows Messenger (rather than IE pop ups), try enabling the XP firewall. That should help .

so a search for a program called ad aware or adaware 6.

it finds all those annoying programs that the websites install on your computer and gets rid of them so popups dont keep popping up.

    Disable Messenger like this:

    1. Click on the "Start" button.

    2. Right-Click on "My Computer"

    3. Choose "Manage" from the menu that appears.

    4. In the left column Highlight "Services and Applications"

    5. In the right column Double-Click on "Services".

    6. Double-Click on the service called "Messenger".

    7. Click the "Stop" button to stop the service.

    8. Change the "Startup Type:" to "Manual"

    9. Click "Apply".

    10. Click "OK".

    11. Close "Computer Management"

You should also try and ween them off of IE.

Get them a real browser like Mozilla.
