Finder sidebar

It annoys me. How do I make it disappear from all of my windows for good. I tried the finder preferences, unchecked everything, but sidebar folders for music, pictures, documents and movies still appear when I open a new window. These four aren't located in the finder prefernces so I can't uncheck them. Please advise.

    just drag the right border of the pane (the one with the dot on it) all the way over the left.

    Activate the Finder...close all open windows...open a new window...set up the window however you want to...close window...you're all done

    Thanks, but everything is reset again when I reboot - the finder sidebar reappears and my list view turns into icons. How do I make this permanent?
