I think i am going to buy one of this jewel.

It will be a good improvement over my canon G1 especially for avoiding to takes blurry pictures.

Just wanted to add that shooting in RAW is quite useful for being able to adjust White Balance, Exposure Compensation, and other adjustments AFTER the shot. I always shoot in RAW as it gives me the best quality and versatility.

    Good luck shooting!

    Newest Favorite Thread!

I went to Germany for Christmas (short version: cold, dark and gray) and justified the 300D for the trip. I went slightly mad with the accessories (one of which being this here 12" Powerbook ).

Yesterday a Bogen Manfrotto tripod and monopod got delivered. Mad, mmmad!

later get a 20-35 or 17-40, a bigger zoom like the great 70-200 Sigma APO HSM , speedlite and battery grip perhaps.. enjoy, post your cmaera review soon ... *sighs* I wannaa 300d

be careful with the sigma zoom. I have read on many photos forums, that the eos 10 or the digital rebel do not accept the sigma lenses. While connected a message of error 99 is displayed and it's impossible to use the camera. Some people said that Canon did this, in order to prevent people of buying sigma lenses (which have a better ratio quality price). Sigma is supposed to commercialise new lens especially for digital cameras who will correct this issue.

I need an advice : do you think that the rebel is able to take pictures every days, or is the 10 d is a better choice for such a regular use (thousands of pictures per year ? )

Sigma will flash any affected lenses that display a '99' error code, and you only get these codes on the last revision of their lenses. IOW, you have to buy new old stock in order to run into this problem.

Certainly the 10d is a boofier camera to hold, but it has been discontinued now from what I have seen, so you might be able to get one on run out with some nice deep price cuts, the tuffer body and all might be advantageous.. perhaps wait and see what the 10d is replaced by first and then make up your mind if your not in a real hurry, that way you have the choice of 300d, runout 10d and new whatever it is.. to know if the 300d is going to be a real long termer is hard to say until it has been knocked around for a year or two by the populace.. either way this was a very important camera for canon so even 'cheaping' the 10d down a bit into the 300d I think it will still be a good solid camera for years yet. Take them both for a test hold, one might fit your hand better than the other and that is an important thing.

PBG4, so the one I have which is about 2000 vintage will be ok, no need for flashing, can any decent camera shop do if it reqd?

    gsxrboy,

I would say the only way to make sure is to bring your lens down to the camera shop and plug it into a 300D. I know the shops around here would have no problem allowing you to do this. AFAIK only Sigma can flash the lens, you have to ship it to them. The flash service is free but you pay for shipping.

I would get 2x256MB CF cards rather than 1x512MB - if one breaks down you have your bets better hedged (and from memory, it might work out a little cheaper)

Also, get a FireWire CF card reader - the photo files are quite large (too large for USB 1.0 IMO - Canon should have put a FireWire port on this baby, just like on the 1D) - you can wait around for a long time for files to download.

Finally, congrats - this is a great value piece of kit.

    Taco,

I just got the Canon 10d myself and I am very pleased. I got the Canon 24-70 f/2.8L lens and use it all the time. I am very happy with it. It was expensive but represents a lifetime investment. Here are two websites I recommend you check out if you really have an interest in digital photography. Good luck and have fun with your new toy.

As far as I know the 10D has not been discontinued at all. It is still available. Of course Canon will at some point develope a successor to the 10D. This could happen any day now. It is just like buying a new Mac. You never know when the next great thing will be announced.

PMA 2004 is in a couple of weeks, so who knows?

I'd like to see Nikon flesh out their line a bit. They currently don't have direct competition to the EOS-1Ds or Digital Rebel, though 'development' of the budget D70 has been announced...no set date

    Eugene,

If you go to this website you will find some interesting discussions concerning the D70. It sounds like its going to be a nice camera. I am happy with my 10D and hope to be for many years to come.

ps.......i had a chance a few weeks ago to use a 1DS for a weekend and was blown away. Full sized sensor is the way to go.

I couldn't recommend the Sandisk Ultra II range of memory cards enough, whatever format, they're alot faster than 90-95% of the cards out there - not bad prices too.

I agree. I have a SanDIsk ultra II 1 GB card and it works well. WIth the 10D shooting at 3fps you can run into a short delay in writing from the buffer to the card but it has been overly troublesome.

I don't necessarily agree on that. Nikon says they will not be releasing a 35mm sensor digicam anytime soon and they're sticking with their DX (APS) sized sensors. It makes sense to me because lenses can be made smaller/lighter with equivalent focal lengths.

Kodak and Olympus seem to be set on the 4/3 system.

The nice thing about Nikon's digitals is that they all have the same sized sensors.

The 1D, 1Ds and 10D/300D all have different sized image sensors.

Rob Galbraith, the noted anti-Mac digital photgraphy pundit, has a database on CF card speeds for al the popular SLRs.

    For the 10D: http://robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_p...?cid=6007-6111

    For the D2H:

I'd say the Sandisk Ultra II series and above is worth the extra cost if you own D2H (5.2 MB/s), but if you have a 10D (1.3 MB/s), a cheaper card might be more bang for the buch.

    Eugene,

Thanks for the link. That looks like a great site. I have bookmarked it. I am still a babe in the woods with this digital photog stuff and can use all the help I can get. My comment about the sensor in the 1Ds was based on the images I got from it. My mother who has been around for a while and has raised 5 boys now has a few character lines in her face and the 1Ds brought these out. I was amazed at the detail it extracted from her experienced face. I am not sure if that is a function of his glass or the sensor size or the pixel count but whatever it was it jumped out at me.

Thanks for the links Eugene, it's worth pointing out that although this thread is about one particular camera, which takes CF, those Ultra cards are available in SD format that read and right at 9Mb/s and I believe more SD-format cameras are able to reach that speed.

    Thanks again.
