My latest Mac is about 3 years old and I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on purchasing a replacement...

What say you?

EDIT

Err in the poll: That should be: Every 3 years... My better half would kill me if i **DIDN'T** wait at least this long!

I get one about every 2 years and I am the one that prevents wife from upgrading after every new release. Thank goodness she works in a Mac enviroment and gets to use their stuff.

How about "several times a year, what the hell, it's fun, and with eBay I never lose money"?

On average, about every three years. I look for a more-or-less tripling of speed before I really feel the need. My CPU history would be something like

    33mz >150mz > 450mz > dual 1gz

A dual 3.0 is going to be pretty hard to pass up, shold one arrive later this year.

I used to do it every year (one laptop and one desktop), but started to realize that I was paying too much for new machines that weren't enough of an improvement over the old machines being replaced... so I've scaled back to about every other year.

I might modify that further to a new laptop every 2 years and a new desktop every 3-4 years, since I find I'm becoming more portable-oriented than desktop-oriented.

    Truth be told...

I'm not sure what time span is best... Hens the topic...

    - Every year (with selling via ebay a 1 year old machine)

    - Every 3 years or so (with no sale due to the age of the machine)

Hmmm help me make a case to my wife for selling and re-buying early (and often) ... please!??!

Jade in the Mac Achaia (Ars) buys a new low end iBook every January and it costs him less than a dollar a day.

You always do best with low end hardware.

Yeah but what if you bought a top of the line tower every 3 years? If you sell you sell it in three years and have saved a buck a day you should still be able to get another top of the line Mac.

In three years an iBook might have the same performance as a three year old dual 2GHz mac but I doubt it.

So people replace their Macs periodically and even buy new ones?

I'm going to have to discuss this with my wife. She assured me this wasn't true.

I have a Cube that I'm running on now that just passed the 4 year mark, I'm planning on a G5 PB when they show up, but this thing will still get heavy use until the day she dies.

You dont want to do that Nick. Those old towers you are using will last forever. Do not approach the woman. She will castrate you.

I've been an "every year or so" kinda guy with my last 4 or 5 machines... but with the wife back in school, my Ti550 is comin up on close to two years. I'm itching so bad. I'm of the theory that you sell while your current machine still has some moderate desireability in order to finance your new purchase. Seems less painful that way to me. With Macs especially helps when you can sell while there's still some Applecare left.

I went from Color Classic in 1993, to a Centris 650 in 1995, to an iMac 333 in 1999, to a iBook G4 in the last week of 2003. I average about four years between Macs, I guess.

How can you guys sell your machines? I might be able to bring myself to sell my Quicksilver, but the Cube will be with me forever, as well as my Apple II, Mac +, Mac LC, and 6400. But all of those are a part of history now . I guess this post doesn't really have a point, other than to say, I've never sold a Mac.
