iMacs and Xmas
I was thinking it would probably be good for apple to give the imac specs a little shot in the arm around late October, early November (or hell, September) for the holiday buying season. The question is, given the Powermacs, what can he reasonably expect. I know they are all duals now, but it seems like it would be in poor form to go too much over the bottom ends 867.
So here is my guess (this is for 17 and 15 inch superdrive models), I haven't thought enough about what would be under it.
933
1 Mb L3
133 bus
133 ram
same GPU and HD for the 17 incher
4MX and maybe a slightly higher screen res for the 15 inch, same HD.
So am I on the money, or just on crack?
What the heck, the is it using my "log in" name instead of my "publically displayed" name?

I don't see it happening. Apple has a 6 month update cycle. As of June, the iMacs received their update; the 17 inch model. Don't count on anything else until January.

I consider that more of an "addition" rather than and update. like the 14 inch ibook, which was then updated 4 months later.
It seems plausible enough to me

I would have to agree with you. The processors in the iMac are due for a speed boost. Now that we have faster PowerMacs Apple is free to upgrade the iMacs in time for the holiday shopping season. What I would hope to see is the same price points of the current iMacs with a top end of 1-1.2 Ghz and 133 ram. The consumer and pro modesl still are distinguished between single and dual processors as well as SDR and DDR.
Apple Expo Paris?

Seybold would be a good venue for an updated Xserve . Paris would be good as any time for the iMac. I would expect a display update sometime soon, the current models are getting a little old and expensive based on recent consumer price drops in LCD displays. I would hope to see a new consumer device before December as well. The question is will Apple do these as special events, or trade shows.
the difference between emac and imac is now almost nothing. to boost the emac with 800mhz and sdrive and no speed bost for the imacs is maybe the most stupid decission since introducing flower power imacs!

933 or maybe 1 gig depending on the cost difference... 800 on the low end for sure
NO L3 Cache... too expensive for an "i" machine...
133 Bus and ram on all models
4MX on the top 2, 2MX on the bottom 2
Same screens across the line... no reason to re-engineer a screen...
it should be in time for the Xmas season, probably at the same time they update the PowerBooks... whenever that may be...

I'm not really thinking "re-engineer" just a small resolution bump on the 15 inch.
17" goes to 933 w/133 bus. I just don't see Apple jumping the iMac to 1gig from 800. (Hope I'm wrong though)
15" Combo goes to 800 with increased screen resolution (and maybe G4MX w/32 if the 17" gets 64mb on the vid card)
I agree that Apple has moved the eMac pretty close to the iMac with the speed bump and Superdrive but I think the thought at Apple is that the new design of the iMac is also a big part of the differentiation between the machines. Flat screen LCD's are a hot button item right now. The eMac has good specs but will still be seen as a bit "dated" by some because of the design (original iMac - been there, done that) and the CRT. Apple is big on design and I think that the new iMac's design and modestly better specs will be enough of a difference for them now.
Again, I hope I'm wrong. A 1 gig iMac would be cool!
Did someone show you a polariod of that computer?
Don't trust his lies.
A refresh of the iMacs just before the holiday season (perhaps mid-November) would be perfect. It certainly would spur sales as people will indeed be buying many computers then and the consumer Macs especially need to look very attractive. It just makes good business sense. Hopefully the iBook will be brought up to 700/800 by then as well.
I wouldn?t rule out getting 1 GHz iMacs only because with this recent PowerMac update, Apple has taken pains to distinguish the PowerMac from the iMac in regards to price and performance. Also, reaching the 1 GHz mark is important for psychological reasons. I suspect a potential ?switchee? would be more comfortable buying a machine at 1 GHz than at 900 MHz.
What about DDR, will we see that in the iMacs any time soon? DDR is one of the things I am waiting for before I purchase a new iMac, however, I grow impatient.
If Apple expects to stay around, they need to shorten their product cycle from 6 months or when they do decide to update, the changes need to be much bigger.

I doubt that we will see DDR in the iMac till Apple if forced to drop the G4. There just isnt much evidence that Moto is willing to make the changes to the G4 needed for a practical implementation of DDR, and the results on the new dual Gig make its solution seem more like a Hack by Apple so that they can claim that they have a DDR pro computer.
I wish Apple would use the Radeon 9000 instead of the Geforce 4MX in the iMacs, as it might help the Mac gaming scene, since the 9000 has shaders.

your on crack, get serious....
One of the things they could do is switch the whole flat panel iMac range to the 1 gig and differentiate the top two models with Superdrive, Widescreen and graphics card and ram/hardrive.
One of the things I liked about the consumer ibook is the way all the processors were the best Apple could offer in terms of G3 and the line was differentiated via memory, optical drive etc...
Yeesh. A whole year and still on 700mhz? Crap for a £1k machine.
