Free songs?

I found a cache of songs on the New Order website (http://www.neworderonline.com). Most of their own stuff is Real Media but they've posted a bunch of fan covers in MP3 at decent compression rates, and there's even a live radio cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart by the Cure.

So where else can we get free songs? One time someone came onto this site (Darcy Fray) and told us to download her album and it's still on my iPod. Not the greatest, but not bad, either.

There were once thee or four unreleased tracks available on the Monaco website, though I don't think they're up any more.

I'm especially looking for recommendations for alternative/rock songs that are free.

If you've got a band, please feel free to post links to your songs here.

Over The Rhine has an MP3 rarity of the month section, as well as an MP3 attic. Their Good Dog Bad Dog album was pretty good, but I haven't gotten around to checking out the rest of their stuff.

Check out these audio selections on New Order Net (http://www.new-order.net/no/audio/) too. Some neat stuff.

    Nice one tonton.

Now I'd suggest you go download "The Grey Album" by DJ Danger Mouse but as it's not strictly legal, perhaps I best not. But were you to stumble upon it by searching Google, well, you could not only download the whole album but you get to make a political statement at the same time. However, this one's legal I think http://djdangermouse.com/

a friend of mine's band, Shattered Existence, has a few songs available. its metal though. not alt/rock.

the dead and phish have very liberal policies on their live stuff. basically, if it's bootleg, it's free to pass around; if it's from a store, it's not. i don't have any links though. gnut & kazaa often do. these aren't alt rock either tho.

www.sharingthegroove.org has a LOT of live stuff available. I don't know if it's legal or not but it seems to be a very thriving community.

Garage Band has a ton of stuff that is free from unsigned bands. The songs are usually 128 kbps, but some artists have put up higher quality ones.

Some of my favorite bands that have free MP3's:

    The Streetlight Manifesto

I just saw these guys live. All I got to say is WOW!

The Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution have put their entire EP out as 192 kbps MP3s. They are the acoustic wing of The Streetlight Manifesto.

Mustard Plug has a few songs from their first albums up for free download.

The Planet Smashers have a few songs up.

The Littlest Man Band has their tunes up on DMusic.

Suburban Legends alos have a bunch of tunes up on DMusic. You can also get their album from iTunes.

This is your brain on Ska!

The Dead and Phish have recordings collected from tapers here:

    http://www.furthurnet.org/

They have software for OS X that will show you what live recordings and rare recordings available on their P2P network.

I used this software and it's great. LOTS of great live and rare recordings that are legal and availible. Sadly, I don't have a high speed access connection (did at my previous job & downloaded gigs of shit) but if you do...I know you'll get hooked.

Not just Dead shit but anything from punk/funk/jazz and classic 60's rock shows too.

    The Dresden Dolls...

My roomate plays drums for them - it's just him and this girl Amanda Palmer.

Getting popular, but not really my cup of tea but I won't let that stop me from saying give it a listen

    Free...

P.S. Anyone want to explain the interest in free songs? I mean, I'm open to all kinds of music and understand the serendipity of stumbling onto cool unknown songs...is that all this is? Or is the free aspect enough for you to like anything you find?

I've known people that like anything of any quality or genre seemingly only on principle as long as it's free. It goes against my hate-everything-first-then-let-it-grow-on-me that I apply to 99% of all music I hear. Plus I'm picky about recording quality (live is an exception mostly).
