Same with John Lewis in Oxford st.. The size difference between the big Viao with the 16" screen and Powerbook is quite amazing. The Sony is one obese slob compared to the Titianium supermodel...... (7 kg or something fully loaded...Ouch...!)
Well I went to my campus computer outlet, and checked out the powerbooks. They are on sale at 400 off the high end, 200 off the low end. I know the sales dude there pretty well and I told him I was considering the low end. "No, you're going to wait a few weeks," he said. I told him I didn't care about a superdrive, I don't need one, so he says, "maybe so, but wouldn't an extra CPU be worth a couple weeks and a couple hundred to you?"
That's all he would say. He changed the subject to the new Powermacs and Apple's focus on dual CPUs as a last-ditch effort to distract attention from the performance gap. It's all good to me, since I'm not going to be buying a Powermac anytime soon, but I wanted to test him and see if I'd get the "WAIT" lecture or not. Sure enough, I got it.
Dual G4 Powerbooks? Does that give everyone woodies or no? If Apple could find a way to package dual G4s into a Powerbook, even if it were thicker than the current ones, well it would be a remarkable laptop and just thinking about running OS X on such a Powerbook sends chills down my spine.
Nah Apple wouldn't put dual procs in the Powerbook unless they knew they could keep em chilled enough to not be a problem. That being said, I wouldn't doubt if they figured out how to do it, especially since they could probably add a nice heatsink that would encase both chips like many videocards have w/o making it too terribly think. Worst case scenario the new PBooks may be a whole .5" thicker, but if they jump to dual proc 800/933 or better and also get the XServe style boost, they'll go like hotcakes.

After giving this subject further thought, the only reason I could see a sales person doing this is to aviod returns and price adjustments post-release. But this only applies roughly 10 days (according to the Apple store) from the date of purchase. That window opens up tomorrow. Other stores may have different return policies. Otherwise, it still is kind of hard to imagine someone whose primary goal is selling computers to tell someone to wait.

Personally I would LOVE to have a dual G4 PowerBook. I used my PowerBook more as a portable desktop being plugged in almost all the time. Only when on a plane or for presentations would I use the battery. In fact, with my Wallstreet, I kept the battery in my bag! Usually I had the zip drive and CD-ROM modules in the laptop. Those along with the PCMCIA video card for a second monitor and I had a great desktop computer I could use at the office, take home or to a client's office. I used my PowerBook G4 in the same manner.
Now I'm ready to buy my next Macintosh and I need the performance of a Desktop. I do architectural work and use ArchiCAD, Electric Image, formZ, Photoshop, etc. I need the horsepower the dual G4 allows. If I could have the power of the current desktop machines in a portable package, it would be irresitable. I would no longer have to debate with myself what was more important - portability or performance.

Unlike an employee in a typical computer store who is often paid based on how many comptuers they sell, an employee in a college store is paid a flat rate by the university (who is usually paid by the state) and the employees there are more interested in seeming "cool" than they are with what sells and doesn't sell.
No. The tibook is past it's 6 months update cycle and 2nd Apple doesn't use Expos for a lot of releases any longer. Oct 15th ends one of Apple's promos as I said in another thread.

Imagine the coverage apple would get if they came out with a dual laptop. .5" thicker, would add alot of battery life. Slightl larger battery, same size screen, and engergy prefs that allow you options to use the dual:
?When the 1st starts to max out (4-5hrs)
?Never(7hrs of real battery life)
?Always(2-3hrs of battery life)
Those would be some neat options to have...specially if they could keep it under 6lbs. - i'd get one...heck i want one now, i just cant afford one for another month or so (stupid part-time jobs only paying $8/hr)

Its about time we put the whole dual processor in powerbooks theory to rest. That is absolutely NOT going to happen in the near future. Not with the current chip designs used by apple. You guys have seen the heat sinks in the powermacs that have dual processors, havent you? They are f'ing huge. Granted apple has great engineers and could get them alot smaller, BUT the kind of heat / size of the beast would be absolutely to large.

By that reasoning there should never have even been a 667MHz PowerBook... I mean look at the size of the heatsink on the 667MHz PowerMac (they used the same processors...)
Your misinterpreting my reasoning. Dual processors are a whole different kinda party (FOABH talk). I will bet anyone on this board money that dual processor laptops in the same form factor they are in now will not appear in the next year or 2, if at all.
