Yeah, I know. It's just that someone started a thread stating this and it wasn't true. Tuesdays do hold some mystical significance for Apple and the 5th is a Tuesday. Something is coming very soon. Very soon.</strong><hr></blockquote>

I'm guessing it's because too many companies choose to make announcements on Monday, therefore Apple chose Tuesday to maximize free buzz.

Obviously you know nothing. Hasn't the great Jack shown that the true way to accurate hieroscopy is through the use of imitation goat entrails?

Smearing real, usable goat entrails angers the gods of Apple Future(TM) and will only provide images of a fat, sweaty bald man jumping around muttering something about ... developers?!?

    Just a thought here,

I thing that if Apple want to take advantage of christmas and the holiday, they will most probably release new products (computers).

Now if they release an update of any of their computers other than the Powerbook G4 before christmas, the Mhz gap between the PB G4 and their new computers will make the PB G4 look like even slower in comparison (the current PB already have the lower Mhz processor).

So, the Powerbook being updated before christmas makes a lot of sense in my opinion. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

An update tot he iMac, eMac, and iBook would probably generate more sales, after all Christmass is a consumer buying season, and the PowerBook is more of a pro computer.

I agree. The iMac is even more overdue for an update. It was introduced in January at the same clock speeds. The only change is the 17" display. It is time for a faster bus and G4.

You guys just don't get it do you. Where is apple going to get these updates from. The current G4 can not scale much higher than 1.25Ghz. Look how freaking hot these chips are!!!! How in all the earth is apple going to be able to put one in the PowerBook. How can they update the ibook when the G3 can not go faster than 700Mhz? The iBook can not take a G4 because they are to hot for a fan less laptop. They could update Graphics, Drives, and etc. But you will not see any speed upgrades until next year. The iMac could take a faster chip, perhaps, but then they would be up close to the Powermacs again.

\tIn other words is an upgrade before the MPC7457 possible? Well yes it is, but it will only be half an upgrade. If they do decide to upgrade the PowerBooks. Well I just don't see where they are going to do it from.

the iMac could easily be updated to

    933 and 800Mhz

    133mhz Bus

    4x AGP

    w/ GeForce 4MX

this is the least i expect for the next tune-up.

    iBooks:

where did you get your info about the G3 not going past 700mhz? You might be thinking about the 750cxe Sidewinder. That had a cap of 700Mhz. But the new 750Fx Sahara can scale to at least 1Ghz and have a 200Mhz bus.

The iBook doesn't need to go G4 just yet. One more 100Mhz Speed bump, then sometime around April or May, they can pop a 7457 in there....

    Powerbooks:

Again....a little speed bump to 933 isn't out of the question here. neither is a 64MB vido card.

    edit: typo

Remember that the Power Macs have dual G4+s being pushed as far as they'll go (in saleable quantities). The same 74?? at 1GHz with 1MB L3 cache would use much less than half of the power of two 1.25GHz 74?? with 4MB of L3 cache.

What are the differences in the G4 (74xx) family?

What I am trying to say is not that an update is impossible, but that no great updates are coming. I am guessing that apple will go ahead and wait on the PB until they have a faster chip for it. Otherwise they make themselves look bad introducing half assed upgrades. Thats just my two cents though.

You guys can argue forever that it is possible for apple to upgrade the PB before christmas, and I understand your points on the subject. I just don't think it's going to happen because I see no chip to be put into them. Maybe they will do some little upgrade of 100mhz but come on even the towers have been upgrading more that the lately. ... I truly think we will have a substantial upgrade to the PB's next year along with the towers. Really I do...

When I started to catch up on the old posts associated with this thread, and saw that Moki dropped a hint about the next powerbook, I was sure the remainder of the thread would be in response to the "bone" he seemed to be throwing in our (the "uninformed") direction. But his note seems to have slipped everyone's attention. So, Moki, *please* , give us something to look forward to!

I don't think that it's a matter or supply. Right now they are using low voltage 7455's. The same chip that's used in the tower. Again, a little bump to 933Mhz to tide us over until Motorola delievers the 7457. Nothing drastic. I see no reason why apple can't and already hasn't done this....

Slightly unrelated, but just saw a comment by Joswiak concerning DVD-R in the Powerbook:

    Taken from:

    <a href="http://news.com.com/2100-1040-963630.html?tag=fd_top"; target="_blank">DVD burning a hot ticket for laptops -- News.com</a>

    [quote]

Apple's problem is more technical. The company's Titanium PowerBook uses a slot-loading optical drive design rather than the more typical tray. Because of this approach, the PowerBook trailed competing PC notebooks and even Apple's own consumer iBook with CD-RW and CD-RW/DVD combo drives.

The situation would appear to be the same for DVD recording drives. Greg Joswiak, senior director of Apple's worldwide hardware product marketing, could not estimate when DVD recording drives would be available on the PowerBook.

"We'll offer them as soon as the slot-loading drives are available," he said. <hr></blockquote>
