LCD iMac at current iMac pricing?
Can Apple incorporate a LCD in the iMac and keep the pricing about the same as the current models.
I say this because:
http://www.gateway.com/home/prod/hm_profile3sp_ProdDetail.shtml
Now that Gateway is a steaming pile of cow dung.
Apple can do way better without even making an attempt.
My question is, will Apple have to make any tradeoffs to get the new iMac at similar pricing to the current models.
The $1499.00 price can be pretty easily reached but am uncertain about pricing at the lower price points. Some guessing here:
Low end:
700 MHZ G3
15" LCD
128 MB ram
30 GB HD
CDR-W drive
2 USB ports
2 Firewire ports
10/100 Ethernet
GeForce 2 MX graphics (16MB)
Built in H/K speakers
KB/Mouse
Mac OS X 10.1.2/ Mac OS 9.2.2
Usual bundled software
Price: $1199.00
Mid-range model:
800 MHZ G3
15" LCD
256 MB ram
40 GB HD
Combo drive
GeForce 2 MX - 16MB ram
Everything else the same
Price: $1499.00
High end model:
900 MHZ G3
15" LCD
256 MB ram
60 GB HD
Combo drive
GeForce 2 MX - 16 MB ram
Everything else the same
Price: $1699.00
Would like to see the pricing lower but really not sure if they could do it.
I want one though. Beats out my current G4 400 tower with exception of no Altivec.

I hope not either but you do know who we are talking about?
The current top-of-the-line iMac , with its completely average, less-than-stellar specs, shouldn't cost what it does, so...
Any GOOD reason the 15" Studio Display costs $599?
I would like part of the Frisco keynote to include a little price drop on the Apple Displays...all of them.

I agree with applenut about there not being an iMac over $1499. If someone was going to pay that price why not get a tower?

Because you still have to include the price of the screen. $1,694 (lowend G4) + $599 (current 15" LCD) = $2,223 which is a lot for a consumer to spend. I don't see the price going above $1,599 but it could fall between $1,499 and $1,599.
Radeon or GeForce 2 MX please.
Would like to see the "magical" 1 GHZ in the top end but have learned to set my expectations low.
The 15" LCD could be history in Apples display line if the LCD iMacs show up.
New displays:
17" LCD - $799.00
19" LCD - $1199.00
22" LCD (Cinema) - $1999.00
All will have a mildly redesigned case I would think.
Of course, the displays might not show up if we still have the old Quicksilvers.

I wish for better drives and video cards, but other than that would be very satisfied with said machines.
Just different processor, ram, and drive configurations I would think.
I presonally would like to see a iMac Special SE with a G4 and Superdrive for $1999.00.
Well, I said I would LIKE.
That would be sweet as hell but I sort of doubt it.
Based on a few rumors I could see the following happening.
Low end
700 MHZ G3
17" CRT
128 MB ram

ATI RAGE 128 Ultra /16MB of SDRAM

there is no way apple will redesing 2 imacs. one for a low end model that would be fased out in the first 6moths of it being intoduces with a CRT. And a LCD that will carry the imac for the next couple years.
That would just be stupid. Desinging a computer cost a lot of money. They only have enogh money for one desing. Not two.
Count on 15" LCD's at a price point of $999 and up. mabe they will sell a $699 imac in the curent fourm. But that is not likely. But there is no way they are going to have both a 15"LCd and a 17"LCD.
I think the video chip will be the same as Apple would not have to have 2 separate motherboards. These would all be the same.
Just different processor, ram, and drive configurations I would think.

That's not impossible: Maybe this:
low:
700MHZ G3
CD-RW
16MB card...ATI
30GB
128MB
$899
800MHZ G3
CD-RW
ATI 16MB
40GB Drive
256MB
$1099
900/1GHZ G3
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
Geforce 2 32MB
60GB Drive
256MB
$1299
933 MHZ G4 on 133MHZ Bus
SuperDrive
Geforce 2 32MB
256MB
60GB
$1499-$1699
At those points, the things would sell like crazy. Like MAD ****ING CRAZY. You can't price the things to close to the bottom tower..though $200 is OK because with the tower you have to buy a monitor.
Even if the towers are G4's....they could be:
1.0 GHZ on 266 DDR BUS
Major board improvements
CD-RW/DVD-ROM
32MB Geforce 2
60GB
Airport Standard
256MB
$1699
1.2 GHZ
SuperDrive
New ATI card @ 32 or 64MB
80GB
Airport Standard
512MB
$2499
1.4GHZ Single
SuperDrive
same video as above
100GB
Airport standard
768MB (512 module, 1 256 module, one slot empty)
$2999
Dual 1.4GHZ
SuperDrive
New ATI Card at 64MB
120GB
Airport Standard
1GB RAM
$3499
Then, displays:
17" 799
19" 1199
24" 1999

Note: I screwed up the bus speeds the first time. What I meant was 266 bus...that is what I fixed with the edit(s).

Doesn't sound very likely.
A 233MHz DDR bus? So 116MHz FSB?

Would the low end be a current model left over? I would think they would keep the 700MHZ model, not the 600MHZ. everything else sounds OK to me....
BTW, fix your sig......it's apparEntly.
