if you look at the thread <a href="http://forums.appleinsider.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=1&t=002550&p=1"; target="_blank">here</a> you'll see that the next G4-class processor of motorola which will be available at the beginning of 2003 will be up to 1.8Ghz BUT still have NO DDR and probably not even a faster FSB... wow - what a joke -&gt; a dual 1.8Ghz G4 with 167mhz single data rate front side bus ....

edit: to be clearer look <a href="http://e-www.motorola.com/collateral/SNDF2002RECAP_Q1228.pdf"; target="_blank">here</a> for the related pdf from motorola and search for the 7457 ...

not that the G4 is a bad chip but the bus-speed (transfer rate) is....

good catch Krassy, they speak of a 512 KB L2 cache 4MB L3 cache and still the same mpx bus for the 7457, but you will notice either than in 2004 thre is a 7457 RM with DDRAM. It's seems that the lattest developpement of the G4 plus will be the 7457 RM with speed from 1,2 to 2 ghz, the simple 7457 start at 867 mhz.

Personnaly if Apple release a dual 1 ghz 7457 for the prize of the dual 867 i will buy it, cause i need a new mac and cannot wait until end 2003.

    Different Scenario:

2002 Summer: Apple hardware group works on Wind Tunnel Power Macs awaiting higher power G4?s from Motorola. Moto achieves this higher power -- as promised -- by connecting the G4?s directly to 5v supply (instead of 1.3v). Unfortunately, some calculation anomalies ensue. One test system reports ?Processor-Not-Found?. Moto admits problem to Apple mere weeks before MWNY. Apple blows his (its) top, again. Last Moto processor will be ?stuffed? into Apple MoBoard in Nov. 2002.

2002 Fall: Apple earnings sour and market share drops. Jobs says, "Looking forward, we do not expect our industry to pick up anytime soon, though we're hoping to help put a lot of iPods, iMacs and iBooks under trees this holiday season". Apple temporarily abandons Pro buyers to focus on consumers. Power Macs and Power Books will be sold ?as is? to those unsuspecting Pro buyers who don?t follow Mac news/rumor sites. iMacs and iBooks to be refreshed with 1 GHz IBM G3 FX processors before holidays.

2003: MWSF debuts new Power Macs with Multi-G3s -- 2x and 4x. If G3 FY (Altivec) is not available, Power Books will be mothballed for 3 to 6 months. All computer models will be bumped every 3 to 4 months as the low power G3s are revved in speed. For MWNY (or MWBM?), S. Jobs will wear a clever disguise.

2004: MWSF debuts new Power Macs with single PPC 970s -- supply constrained due to ramp/yield problems. Mac performance will now match WinTel PCs (at least those from mid-2002). New Power Macs will ship immediately -- before the end of Q1.

i think the next processor in the PowerMac will be a 750-series processor from IBM at 1+Ghz with higher bus speed 200Mhz+ and a SIMD unit. these processors should be shipped shortly...

    see at the roadmap:

    hint: Rapid/IO is inccluded!!!

It does but with out cache snooping. In other words, we might as well not have it.

Assuming Motorola is the main supplier, the future of the Power Mac for the next 12-16 months will be more of the same:

Incremental CPU speed bumps accompanied by a seriously limp-wristed DDR architecture. No way in hell will Apple spend a penny on R&D or engineering to rev the architecture yet again, unless they can somehow make both chips (74xx and 970) work on the same board / setup.

Then perhaps we'll see something good next summer, with the G4 units becoming the "Prosumer" models, and the 970 units being the higher "Superuser" models once available. I have a sneaking suspicion the 970 machines will all be over $3000. Hope I'm wrong.

I thought the new G3-FX was more "SMP Capable" than the older model G3s. Don't claim to be an expert.

I do think a low-power, high MHz G3 class processor would be a much better fit for the half-dome base of the FP iMac. Perhaps no fan. Maybe even 2 easily accessible memory slots of the same type! If the ?Altivec? version of the G3 is ready, then (almost) everyone should be happy. (drifting slightly off-topic)...
