Very good point. There comes a time though when a computer is no longer useful or you give/sell it to someone else and maybe they already have a monitor. I agree though, I like all-in-ones. When I'm ready for a new computer, I'm usually ready for a new display too.
I just can't afford a G5 at currrent price points. I wish they could find a way to get the prices down. And yes I know that most things you might want in your system comes in a mac, but, you never know what cool tech advancement is around the corner and what interface it will use.

I don't understand your not understanding. Do you think that all those displays at Best Buy and CompUSA and Fry's is just wasted retail space? No! They are there because people want to choose what display comes with their system. Even if you sell the display with the old system, you want to be able to choose your next one. Face it. There are plenty of displays out there that are better than what comes on an iMac, (arm notwithstanding). Just about any CRT is better than what comes on an eMac. Sometimes your display will outlast your computer. How many people out there own a first generation iMac 2 who are happy with the display but wish they could put another computer under it. Why do you think Apple bothers to sell displays at all? My iBook comes with a display but I have another display attached to it because I wanted more screen real estate for when I was at home. People wanting to be able to buy a display of their choice is what is common in the market. It is only a small group of people who never want to be able to choose their display.

agreed... I don't know if that market is THAT small... but its a lot smaller then consumers wanting to update their displays.
When posters compare the price/performance of the iMac to a Dull, let's look at the next generation iMac: G5 - nuff said. Price/performance will change dramatically so basically the argument is based on the old versions to base the next generation.
Friend comparing a G5 iMac with a Dull he can get for $600 (before the price is jacked up)? Probability is now high that the friend has been down that Dull road at least once. Has a lot of experience with the joys of the virus/worm situation, the 2001 patches he has had to make. Probably had to reformat the disk and reinstall Windows (and all its patches - installing about 10 at a time if he is smart) then Office (and patches) then he can get to his other apps. He's gonna REALLY be interested in another box that treats him the same way? How many dull boxes does he have to buy before he learns?
Apple can wait for him to learn his lesson. Then someone will show him what a Mac is about and price/performance is going to be the lowest consideration. If money is tight he'll get a used Mac on ebay.
The next generation AIO G5 iMac will be for those that have learned their lesson..
By the way, hmurchison, it's a boy! Mother & baby fine - father in a daze . . .

One, Apple has admitted that the iMac is over priced, no matter what the performance is.
Two, do you know for sure that the iMac is getting a G5 next rev.?
Regarding AIO's being "done," I guess I don't get the problem. At one time Apple needed to refine, redefine and streamline it's product line ... wow that's like a rap line ... I think with iPods and other devices on the horizon, that is no longer important.
Meaning... Apple needed to be Apple again. It did that with the original iMac, the iPod, the new PBooks (beginning with the TiBook that still turns heads when I bring it out at a meeting...years later) and even Unix-based Panther. So now Apple has almost remarketed itself to the larger world ... at least the part that isn't the unwashed Wal-Mart masses or the relic IT folks who just never may get the whole Mac thing. That means Apple is slowly getting to that semi-Sony like place in the market's consciousness. It isn't Sony and it will never be Sony, but it is finding a spot somewhere near there.
So now I feel it doesn't need to limit its product line anymore. We are beyond OS9 and we are beyond the 2x2 product matrix.
So that means there is no need to arbitrarily constrain the product lines.
Many of those calling for the death of the iMac, might also be those who bemoaned the Cube. Both are revolutionary designs with constained upgrade paths and constraining price points. Yet both have people who LOVE them. As much as the Cube wasn't a blockbuster, it also wasn't a mistake. It just needed to evolve into a sustainable upgrade path and price/perf. ratio. Same for the current iMac. And though I don't know, I bet Apple didn't lose alot of money on the Cube and I bet they have at least made back their R&D budget on the iMac. So what is the problem.
Apple is beyond the need for the one-hit wonders. Apple can have the iMac and bring back the Cube if it wanted to and if it can get the price to a reasonable level, it can do so with some profit. It may not be to the margins of the laptops, but I for one still believe that consumer choice and great design are as integral to Apple's future as the 28% profit margin. For both products the R&D is already spent anyway.
Apple just needs to do better at allowing folks to upgrade. IT may mean some would be paying a 3rd party to put a G5 in their Bondhi iMac crt, and that money wouldn't go into a new G5 tower, but if Apple did a better job of working with upgraders, they could still get a fair profit on each upgrade, especially since people will eventually want to see Expose on a bigger screen than the 15" crt.
The fact is the AIO is still a good product for offices and schools. Why throw the babies out with the bathwater....just keep them going and make more babies. Boy, that doesn't really sound right, but I think you get it.
Oh and about the headless iMac...sure that is a great idea. It may hit the Wal-mart crowd and the unix types with 5 computers scattered around their dorm rooms, but it doesn't need to REPLACE the current AIO iMac. It is another CHOICE for another market and it might actually spur purchases of Apple displays. It may compete with current LCD iMacs, but that's okay as long as it competes with Dells and Gateways too.
Two, do you know for sure that the iMac is getting a G5 next rev.? [/B]
Nobody outside of Infinite Loop knows for sure, but common sense suggests that if the iMac *wasn't* getting a G5, it would have gotten a G4 update when the eMac did.

You're right. Problem is NEW computer users (or switchers) don't want to spend $1299 or more on a computer when testing the waters. Some will, but most won't.
That's why Apple needs to get a low end iMac down around $999, not add a bunch of goodies that jack up the price.

I dont know what you mean by adding a bunch of goodies.Whats inside the imac right now aint exactly blowing the market away. There is really nothing left to cut that apples stingyness hasnt already left out.And with the emac sitting at that pricepoint,we wont see a $999 imac, probably ever.If the imac had a G5 it would at least be faint justification for its price but the reality is that apples painted themselves into a corner with this aio only consumer lineup.
Oh and about the headless iMac...sure that is a great idea. It may hit the Wal-mart crowd and the unix types with 5 computers scattered around their dorm rooms, but it doesn't need to REPLACE the current AIO iMac.
Exactly. If anyone is afraid that customers don't see any difference between single- and dual-CPU machines, make them look differently and call the single-CPU Mac bMac or yMac. That way there would be PowerMacs, iMacs and yMacs, all looking differently. What confusion? Is that a damn hard thing to do?
I dont know what you mean by adding a bunch of goodies.Whats inside the imac right now aint exactly blowing the market away. There is really nothing left to cut that apples stingyness hasnt already left out.And with the emac sitting at that pricepoint,we wont see a $999 imac, probably ever.If the imac had a G5 it would at least be faint justification for its price but the reality is that apples painted themselves into a corner with this aio only consumer lineup.
Well, geekmeet said Apple should cram more features in there and sell them for more. I disagree, on the iMac. What the iMac needs is a cheaper price for all those new users and switchers s/he was talking about.
The display support arm and spherical base is costing too much. If Apple could figure out how to make them for less money, iMac prices could come down, and then iMacs would return to their former popularity. The design is great. The price is not.
what apple really needs to do is have 1 imac at just below the 1000.00 dollar price point.
it should have a superdrive,a fast g4 or preferably a g5 in it,airport extreme built-in,ect..............
that would be ideal.
and it should be an imac NOT an emac because although the emac is the best deal going right now its kindof ......uh.
not a computer that people lust for.
and that just proves my point.
if all people wanted were specs........then the emac would be flying off the shelves.
apple should have a sub 1000.00 dollar lcd imac,just below 1000.00......like 999.99.
if they put a 1.5 ghz G4 with a superdive and a decent video card in it WITH airport extreme for under a grand they basically have a good consumer mac.
just as others have stated.........owning an apple "anything"..........is becoming a commodity, like the ipod.
i honestly think that if apple looked at itself as a niche product with room to grow they would be a lot better off.
their powerbooks, the 17 inch in particular are almost luxury items and i think should be marketed as such.
same thing with the mini-ipod.
the imac has the opportunity to be THE luxury computer that people want, not just mac-heads.
look at the the cube...............
it WONT die!
why?
it was a luxury item,a niche product that people lust after.
if apple recognizes its true role and stops trying to compete with dell and hp and the others they would be ok.
their real competition at this point is sony.
its not about price/performance anymore.
its about "sex" appeal.
the original imac has it.
the new imac has it.
the emac does not.
i think a great product for apple, albeit with limited mass appeal due to the price would be a imac/tablet combo.
in others words the lcd screen would be detatchable and you could carry it with you like a portable.
if it had a touch screen/pen input capabilities and wi-fi capablities that would be killer.

Ok but what will you use as a screen for the old computer. I don't know about you guys, but when I get a new computer I don't trash the old one... Macs work for ages. I have a Bondi G3 running Panther and playing iTunes. It workes great...

Well, geekmeet said Apple should cram more features in there and sell them for more. I disagree, on the iMac. What the iMac needs is a cheaper price for all those new users and switchers s/he was talking about.
The display support arm and spherical base is costing too much. If Apple could figure out how to make them for less money, iMac prices could come down, and then iMacs would return to their former popularity. The design is great. The price is not.
let me clarify.............
what apple really needs to do is have 1 imac at just below the 1000.00 dollar price point.
it should have a superdrive,a fast g4 or preferably a g5 in it,airport extreme built-in,ect..............
that would be ideal.
and it should be an imac NOT an emac because although the emac is the best deal going right now its kindof ......uh.
not a computer that people lust for.
and that just proves my point.
if all people wanted were specs........then the emac would be flying off the shelves.
apple should have a sub 1000.00 dollar lcd imac,just below 1000.00......like 999.99.
if they put a 1.5 ghz G4 with a superdive and a decent video card in it WITH airport extreme for under a grand they basically have a good consumer mac.
just as others have stated.........owning an apple "anything"..........is becoming a commodity, like the ipod.
i honestly think that if apple looked at itself as a niche product with room to grow they would be a lot better off.
their powerbooks, the 17 inch in particular are almost luxury items and i think should be marketed as such.
same thing with the mini-ipod.
the imac has the opportunity to be THE luxury computer that people want, not just mac-heads.
look at the the cube...............
it WONT die!
why?
it was a luxury item,a niche product that people lust after.
if apple recognizes its true role and stops trying to compete with dell and hp and the others they would be ok.
their real competition at this point is sony.
its not about price/performance anymore.
its about "sex" appeal.
the original imac has it.
the new imac has it.
the emac does not.
i think a great product for apple, albeit with limited mass appeal due to the price would be a imac/tablet combo.
in others words the lcd screen would be detatchable and you could carry it with you like a portable.
if it had a touch screen/pen input capabilities and wi-fi capablities that would be killer.
but it would be expensive.
its not about price/performance its about LUST.
