make sure you are using the latest version of stuffit expander. also, make sure you let the download complete. in the past, i have thought i was opening a full file, but got an error message. turned out the download had not completed yet, but mac os x was showing the icon correctly due to its suffix.

You need the latest version of stuffit, or at least stuffit 7. I think .stuffit.sitx was introduced in version 7.
