And thats at peak time, most of the time I get "did not calculate sensible result". Off of a fast server I can get speeds up to 7 megabytes a second. Is this, or is this not what college is all about?
I got a pathetic 646 down/125 up on an Earthlink DSL line (rebranded Verizon service) here in Washington DC.
Everybody else in the area seems to get at least double that. Maybe I'm further from the "central office?" I'll rerun the test, but I think it's time to switch to Comcast cable...
I thought I would revive this thread and follow up on my earlier abysmal test results. I'm connected directly to my DSL modem to avoid any router and AirPort hickups during the WWDC Stevenote today.
We still have 4 hours to go until the Stevenote, and my connection felt significantly faster while connected directly to the DSL modem. So I figured I would re-run the test with this setup. The results are as follows:
Download: 681 kbps
Upload: 125 kbps
At this point the answer is clear: I will switch to cable, as soon as I can lay some co-ax to the office or get a Wi-Fi card for the PC.

I've been able to do various FTP, WWW and NNTP downloads at 380-90K/sec, so things must be a little slow right now. Heh.

Scott: I think DSL performs the same around the clock. It's cable that gets bogged down when a lot of people in your neighborhood are online.
tonton: You lucky bastard! That's just not fair. Maybe I'll have to move to HK too.
