new imacs before xmas??
just found this article:
New iMacs Before Christmas
While other sources claim a MWSF introduction, our main (and thus far ture) source says that the new iMac line (867 MHz and 1 GHz, 133 MHz Bus, all 17") will be introduced in some weeks (3-4), ready for the Christmas buying season. Apple has stopped buying 15" panels for some time now, and they think they can get rid of the remaining 15" iMac models by the end of November. First week of December we should see Apple's online store and Holiday Gift Guide updated to reflect the news. (http://mac.fryke.com)
would be really a nice gift! (for me)

Seem to recall someone saying "We like options".

i'm totally with you - except the 19 incher. it took apple years to bring bigger screens than 15" crt in consumer line, so we won't see an 19" imac within the next year (my opinion)
If the iMac gets an update, then so should the emac. They should also produce a low end emac for $799.
Apple had made the ibook very competative in terms of price and i think its time for them to do the same with the i/emacs.

Why not? why should the consumer only get a little 17" screen? why do you think the 17" imac sells better than the 15" imac? because consumers want bigger screens and me to... so gimmi a 19" imac
if they roll out the 19" imac with sweet specs i won't even consider buying a powermac (with 19"). the imac would be fast enough for my kind of heavy photoshopping and the screen would have the perfect size... i know a lot of webdesigners and graphicdesigners who would be more than happy with this machine
Similarly, I think they'll drop the 15" as soon as the 17" display costs are in the same ballpark. Judging the way the larger LCDs have dropped in price, that might not be too long from now. Xmas might be a bit optimistic though.

i would also be happy with an 19 incher but i just don't believe that apple will do that soon.
remember the "old" imac - why didn't we get an 17" crt modell a year or so after the the successful presentation (almost everybody wanted that!)??
because apple alway holds a distance between "consumer" and "pro" models...

Slot loading drives make sense. iBooks had trays then slot drives. The original iMac had trays then slot drives. The current LCD iMac has trays and will eventually have slot drives. Do you notice a pattern here?

i agree with slot drives in the portable line, but it doesn't make sense for me in the desktop line and the pm's never had one and nobody missed it.

The iBook has never had a slot drive.

As I posted in another thread'
Only two things bother me about the slot loaders, one of which is share with even the tray loaders on most macs (so that nees some attention too)
1.) 8cm discs. Like it or not, they are a part of the standard spec of BOTH DVD and CD. Expect to see them in more DVD based camcorders, and MP4 based video solutions. AFAIC, they can keep the slot loader so long as they find a way to accomodate these discs. Odd shaped discs? I don't care, they're not a part of the spec, and I've never even put one into any of my tray loading drives.
2.) MANUAL Force Eject. You're going to need this. Hollywood and Record companies don't just want to keep material from working properly in your drive, they have some schemes that want to do real damage to your computer. It would be a good thing to include on all optical drives, even the tray loaders where Apple ignorantly covers up the force eject pinhole.
When the slot loader debuted there was some confusion on Apple's own page about which discs were and weren't supported. At first they claimed to support 8cm media, but later dropped that claim.

They look cool though. Remember half the appeal of the iMac is how good it looks. A slot loading drive from the powerbook would free up more space in the inside of the iMac also.
It would be bad though if the superdrive was only 1x.
Maybe all the iMacs will habe super drives in them to distinguish them from the eMac.

As someone with an iMac DV with a slot loading drive, I gotta say that I wish it didn't. Takes 2 tries to get a disk to eject, every time. This is a fairly recent occurrence, and the machine is pushing 3 years old, but I have a tray-loader on both my Wallstreet and PC, both are older, and both seem to function better.
