External Drive question

When I move items from my imac to my connected Firewire drive it just puts a copy of the item on my firewire drive, but the original still remains on my imac. I know I can press command and drag but is there a way to have this action defaulted as when one moves files around from internal to external drives?

    Don't think so. Same thing happens when multiple drives occupy a single machine. I just hold down option when I drag. \
