Someone mentioned that APple may release a graphics chip of their own at Macworld San Fracisco and that it had specs better than msot chips currently on the market! Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!

A couple of years ago, Apple bought a company called Raycer that was working on OpenGL graphics acceleration and the like. Ever since, rumours have persisted that Apple will release a custom graphics chip based on Raycer technology.

Depending on what rumours you hear, such a chip would accelerate Aqua on Mac OS X systems, or even be a full-fledged graphics chip in its own right, freeing Apple from dependence on ATI and Nvidia.

Most likely, Apple bought Raycer for its employees' experience with OpenGL, not for their graphics hardware design expertise. I doubt that we'll ever see any Raycer chips in our Macs, but some rumours just won't die. Take that to mean what you will.

The Raycer situation is very similar to the "I Want to Believe" poster that Mulder had on his wall.
