How will Apple introduce the 970?

"phil shiller will come out onstage at macworld dressed as a giant microchip with a large "g4" on the front. steve will direct phil to stand in a particularly well-lit spot on the stage as he waxes poetic for a minute or two about how great the g4 was for apple, how fast, how revolutionary....then he'll pull a handle and release a very large anvil which will fall from the ceiling and crush phil like a beercan. painted on the anvil is the number 970. after a few seconds of dramatic silence, steve will announce,

"as of today, the g4 is dead".

I love that. I like it alot. Ideal intro' for 970!

"steve will then go on to introduce the next big thing, but will end by saying "we're ramping up production now and hope to ship the first ones sometime in the next 2-3 quarters. Thanks for coming"

Ramping it up in the next 3 quarters. Got a love that one. Tee-hee.

    970. The 'PowerMac 970.' I like that. G5. I guess I like that too. The 970 is a great spiritual successor to the chip Moto(?) killed...

970 would allow a clean break. But there's no denying the 'G5' badge is what Mac users have been waiting years for. It would be kind of ironic if Apple didn't use it after all.

I also want a tall cube-esque (yes, yes, of course it will be expandable and take standard size components...) case.

Der-rool. I hope Ives out does himself for the 'G5'.

What about a 'Cube-esque tower' case with Chrome arm and detachable tablet monitor thingie?

Get my head round that...(dreaming whistlfully of said image...)

Well, the signs are good, after "cyclops" and "windtunnel", not.

The El Capitan case was a real mould-breaker - I really doubt they can pull something like that out of the bag again.

I think you need to lay off the eggnog, someone must have dropped their LSD in it.

if by cyclops you mean quicksilver, then you have no idea what you are talking about. The only bad quicksilver picture was the leaked version. If by windtunnel you mean the current G4's, then you havn't seen one in person: They are very sexy (and shiny too!).

I installed seven windtunnel's last week and reconfigured a cyclops at the same time. IMO they're both just about the ugliest Macs ever made.

The El Capitan is a classic case, in its blue & white guise. This version has a couple of problems, chiefly that dust gethers on the inside of the translucent shell. The graphite was an improvement in this area, and probably overall is better. The cyclops and windtunnel added engineering improvements, specifically to the door mechanism - but overall they are bland, specifically in the solid, unveined handles and the souless facades. The windtunnel mix of matt silver/grey, bland unsophisticated handles and ugly chrome faceplate mark it out as a mongrel.

    But that's JMO.

we have the Xserve and the Xraid already. i wouldn't be surprised to see apple introduce a new product tier, the Xmac...a scalable multi-core workstation based around the 970 which will seamlessly integrate with other members of the X family to create a total high-end solution of storage, processing, serving and backup.

the existing G4 powermacs would then drop into the mid-line space for those needing expansion and the extra kick of dual processors.

the imac would continue to be the consumer machine and sport a single processor.

I think the Cyclops and Wind Tunnel trump the previous two Tower skins. I think, inspite of the 'mixed' aesthetic the current tower skin is the best one yet. 'Not'? I guess it's down to subjective opinion. I don't share your opinion.

"The El Capitan case was a real mould-breaker - I really doubt they can pull something like that out of the bag again."

Doubt? After the iMac flat screen, the Cube, iBook and Powerbook I wouldn't doubt Mr. Ives at all.

The current Tower's 'functional' drop door access is nice. But the 'Capitan' case is old.

I'd like to see something stunning and radical.

I wouldn't underate Ive's ability to pull another stunner out of the bag. Nobody really saw the iMac flat superceding the iMac jelly bean. It happened!

Likewise, on a personal level, I'm confident Apple will announce the 970 with a Tower design that oozes style. I think we're in for another treat.

eWeek already has proof that Apple already has test systems of 970's...

HOWEVER, 970/64-bit will start only in the Power Macs!!! Is everyone who doesn't see this blind???

    - - - - - -

This means that apple can start selling 1.4Ghz G4 iMacs when they start selling Dual 1.8ghz P970's.

    - - - - - -

You should probably expect 1ghz G4's or even 1.25ghz G4's in January!

Soooo many people are suggesting only 1ghz... It's all a matter of time. G4's will slowly move out of the Power Mac line completely!!!

Again, we can't have IBM's 970's until they are in production, and thus Big Blue would have to have pretty much lied about the product not coming out... So it's very unlikely to see it in January (but you never know).

    - - - - -

The above was based on facts. The rumors are that G5's may adventually actually exist

    [And I'm talking Motorola... ]

But what I can't stand is figuring out why no one is rumoring underclocked G4's for the ibook. I mean, you could run one colder and you'd see speed...

Aparently, we'll be seeing more G3's... but that just sounds odd to me... Expect 900+mhz G3's in January, if not an even better replacement for ibook and CRT iMacs.

I'm going to kill the next person who calls it the Xraid, or something similar (rather than Xserve RAID.) Seriously, stop making up product names. It doesn't reflect well on your intelligence, not that I'm saying you're stupid or anything. It's just annoying.

    sorry about that.

i didn't mean to spontaneously make up a product name.

i didn't mean to reflect poorly on my own intelligence or the intelligence of others.

i didn't mean to snap your fragile sanity like a twig.

i didn't mean to whip you into a state of homicidal rage.

i didn't mean to annoy you or anyone else.

from now on, i promise to call it "the currently unreleased yet presently expected apple product presumably to be called the X-serve raid"

    mea culpa. mea culpa.

Seriously though, it has become one of my pet peeves, and it's even worse when people don't even use the same name twice, sometimes even in the same post. How people can call themselves Apple fanatics and not even know the names of Apple's simply named products is beyond me.

And, FYI, Jobs did call it the Xserve RAID when the Xserve was introduced.

How about they introduce it with FireWire 2?

How looooooooong is it going to take Apple to ship FireWire 2!?
  • Reply 39 of 42
Now only 7 months-ish to the 970 release.

Then...we'll have Firewire 2 and Gefore FX as standard I hope (dream on Lemon...you'll have to order it as an 'option' on your £2,000 inc VAT purchase of Apple's 970 mid-range 1.6 gig 970 with 256 megs of ram... )

I think maybe we'll see Firewire 2 on a dual 1.4 G4 before then. Maybe Feb'...maybe San Fran'? Don't think so. Feb'-ish according to the Red Kid!!!

Maybe with the Ati 9700 or Geforce FX as build to order option...

I haven't given up on 970 being on mighty white rabbit out of the hat come San Fran Jan' (TM)...it would really send a shockwave through the Apple community.

Logic still says July 2003. That and Panther all over Jaguar in a speed contest? I'm looking forward to Steve's bake-off. 1.8 970 vs 3.6 Gig Pentium 4 with hyperthreading. My money is definately on the 970. With and without Altivec.

It's the one I'm waiting for. I don't really care about anything else in the meantime.

Unless they're putting a 970 in an iMac 19 inch flat with a Geforce FX? If they want machines like that to fly off the sales counter...they know what to do. But as Matsu regularly notes...will Apple do it?

    Lemon Bon Bon

    ...and a sexy case. U-ah...the Uber-luber-lord of cases...Stealth-Bomber Cube-esque stretch limo' job...plenty of expansion...oh...yes...honey...we have lift orf...

thank you! glad some folks got the reference...

now i've had that theme song stuck in my head ever since i posted, so, for old time's sake (and since there's little else to talk about these days before macworld):

    "Baby, if you've ever wondered,

    Wondered whatever became of me,

I'm living on the air in Cincinnati,

    Cincinnati, WKRP.

    Â*

Got kind of tired packing and unpacking,

Town to town and up and down the dial

Maybe you and me were never meant to be,

But baby think of me once in awhile.

    Â*

    I'm at WKRP in Cincinnati..."
